In an ideal world, we’d have our brows professionally shaped and tinted weekly (the dream, really). But work/life/limited finances can get in the way, so an arsenal of at-home styling products is essential in order to maintain perfect arches round the clock.
But given the sheer volume of brow-specific products out there, it’s tricky to know where to start. Are pencils or pomades better? And what on Earth is brow soap? Below, we’re answering all of these essential questions and more, so you can achieve flawless brows on a daily basis – without the recurring salon appointment.

Find Your Formula
First things first: find a formula that works for your natural arch, your desired finish and your skillset. Here’s an exhaustive list of what’s out there and the key benefits:

INIKA Certified Organic Brow Pencil RRP $29
Pencil: Pencils are generally quite soft, subtle and easy to work with, so are an excellent choice if you’re not confident with makeup or just favour a natural finish.

Bobbi Brown Perfectly Defined Long-Wear Brow Pencil RRP $65
Crayon: Crayons are waxier, and thus grip the skin better for a longer-lasting result. They also offer slightly more intensity than a pencil, so are excellent for filling in gaps or sparse tails. Because there are no brushes involved, brow crayons are also pretty user friendly.

Mellow Cosmetics Brow Powder Duo RRP $26
Powder: Like pencils, powders give a natural, almost diffused finish but require precise application. Hot tip: you can even use different shades for a multi-dimensional look.

Pomade: Next rung up the ladder is pomade. Most pomades come in a small pot with an angled application brush, affording you great control and depth of pigment. They’re waxy, long-lasting and great for crafting a sculpted, Kylie Jenner-esque look.

M.A.C Eye Brows Big Boost Fibre Gel RRP $44
Tinted Gel or Wax: Arguably the easiest way to fill and fluff brows is with a tinted gel. Most are applied with a spoolie, and work by depositing some colour and providing hold. You can either use one alone for a natural, fluffy look or pair it with one of the above for a bold, defined finish.

Garbo & Kelly Clear Brow Gel RRP $38
Clear Gel or Wax: Those who are genetically #blessed or simply lazy will favour a simple clear brow gel. While they don’t fill or add density, they will create lift and lock unruly hairs in place. Like the above tinted iteration, you can either use a clear gel on its own, or in conjunction with a pencil/crayon/pomade.

Napoleon Perdis Fixated Brow Styling Soap RRP $32
Brow Soap: Born off the back of the brow lamination trend, at-home brow soaps are like a glossier, waxier version of pomade for an ultra-shiny, lifted look. Apply it with a clean spoolie and lift the brows upwards and outwards for best results.
Notes on Colour Choice
Found a formula but confused about what shade? Our advice is to match as closely as possible to your natural brow colour, but when in doubt go one shade lighter. And remember that for most people, a cool-toned hue is going to deliver a much more believable result.
Application Tips
Now for the fun part! When filling in your brow, take your pencil, crayon or brush and create small, hair-like strokes in an upwards motion. Focus where the hair is sparse, paying extra attention to any gaps or bald spots. Generally speaking, the front of the brow requires less product than the peak and the tail. Finish the job by combing through with a spoolie — not only will it groom the hairs but also blend in the product.
And there you have it! Brilliant brows at home.
