What is slugging?
In a nutshell, slugging involves sealing in your skin with a petrolatum-based occlusive agent (like Vaseline) – this is done after you’ve applied your other skincare products. It helps to heal your skin by trapping in moisture and is usually done at night before you go to bed. You only need a small amount of product for slugging so try using just enough to cover your face in a thin layer. Slugging isn’t just for your face either, you can use this method anywhere on your body that’s experiencing dryness such as elbows, knees and lips.
How does it work?
Occlusive agents create a barrier that seals in moisture to help repair the skin barrier. Unlike many beauty trends to go viral on TikTok, this one is dermatologist approved. If you’re experiencing dry, sensitive skin, try slugging as the final step in your skincare routine.
What skin type will slugging work for?
If you have dry, dehydrated skin, slugging is definitely worth a shot! But if you’re acne-prone, it’s best to avoid applying anything occlusive to your face. However, this doesn’t mean you can’t get a similar result using a thick moisturiser or overnight hydrating mask. Look for a product that contains ingredients like ceramides and hyaluronic acid that can also help to repair your skin barrier.
On a personal note, I started “slugging” my very acne-prone complexion with the Clinique Moisture Surge Overnight Mask years ago when I was on Accutane and it truly transformed my crocodile-adjacent skin to a plump, healthy-looking complexion. I still use it nightly throughout winter or whenever my skin is feeling extra dry.
I’m sold! How do I slug?
Here’s how to try slugging for yourself:
Step 1: Follow your usual nighttime skincare routine.
Step 2: Apply a thin layer of Vaseline, a thick moisturiser or an overnight hydrating mask to seal everything in.
Step 3: Go to sleep and wake up with freshly slugged skin! Be warned, your pillowcases may be greasy in the morning.
