Your guide to banishing (and preventing) breakouts.
Pimple-Prone? Here Are 6 Skincare Products You Should Be Using Pimple-Prone? Here Are 6 Skincare Products You Should Be Using

Of all the skin concerns, acne, pimples and breakouts are a royal pain to treat. There’s often redness, uneven texture, oiliness and scarring in the mix, meaning you need an all-encompassing routine that’s going to target existing breakouts, as well as the root cause.

Lightweight, water-based formulas are your best bet, plus a few treatment products that use ingredients like salicylic acid, retinol and niacinamide to purify and balance. Less is also more, so instead of sampling countless products we instead recommend a handful of effective formulas designed with congested skin in mind.

Here are 6 of our current favourites to clear (not congest) your complexion.

WELEDA Blemished Skin Purifying Gel Cleanser RRP $26.95

It’s important to thoroughly cleanse breakout-prone skin to remove dirt, oil and occlusive makeup that can contribute to congestion. A lightweight, non-foaming gel will do the trick, like Weleda’s Purifying Cleanser. The formula contains willow bark as a natural antibacterial agent, and witch hazel to rebalance.

MEDIK8 Blemish Control Pads RRP $59.00

If you’re prone to blackheads, whiteheads and comedones, a targeted treatment product like the Medik8 Blemish Control Pads is an essential step to keep the skin clear in the long term. These guys are soaked in salicylic acid to dissolve sebum and bacteria, while hydrating glycerin prevents that tight feeling. Just swipe them on breakout-prone areas a few nights a week, let the solution settle into the skin and then throw some moisturiser on top.

SKINSTITUT Retinol Serum RRP $49.00

Vitamin A in its various forms — retinol included — is one of the best ingredients for acne as it regulates skin cell turnover (and a build-up of cells is one of the leading causes of congestion). Look for a light serum, like Skinstitut’s Retinol Serum that will work long-term to promote a brighter, more even complexion. Bonus tip: it will fade acne marks, as well.

My Clarins RE-BOOST Mattifying Hydrating Cream RRP $42.00

Even if you’re super oily, it’s important to provide your complexion with some lightweight moisture — otherwise, it could get dehydrated and will just produce even more oil to compensate. We love the My Clarins Re-boost Mattifying Hydrating Cream. The water-light gel texture feels instantly cooling and fresh while preventing excess shine throughout the day. It’s also fab under makeup.

THE ORDINARY Salicylic Acid 2% Masque RRP $21.90

This wallet-friendly mask contains a blend of salicylic acid, charcoal, kaolin clay and squalane to exfoliate and decongest the skin without over-drying. The salicylic clears out blocked pores, while the charcoal and clay absorb excess oil, leaving the skin smooth and balanced. Either use it as a targeted spot treatment or a weekly all-over mask.

FOREO Espada Blue Light Treatment RRP $199.00

LED light therapy is beneficial for all skin concerns, but blue works especially well for acne as it reduces the incidence of P.acnes (a bacterium known for causing acne). Foreo’s Espada stick is a hand-held device fitted out with a blue light to reduce breakouts and prevent new ones from forming. There’s also a red light function which reduces swelling, redness and inflammation.

Fast delivery – free over $50 – and free returns.
