Cleansing is one of the most important steps when it comes to looking after our skin. Without a clean base that’s free of old makeup, dirt and debris, it’s impossible for your other skincare products, such as your serum and moisturiser, to work their magic in bettering the quality of your skin overall.
Like all things beauty, cleansing is one thing, but cleansing *properly* is an entirely different story. Here are the most important cleansing rules to follow, and the products you should try.
Don’t rely on wipes
Whilst wipes are a really easy and convenient way to get cleansing done, it isn’t the most effective way to really get into your pores for a deeper clean. We highly recommend stocking your beauty cabinet with a cleanser that suits your skin type.
A rule of thumb: oily and combo skin types suit gel or foam textures (like Clinique Anti-Blemish Solutions Cleansing Foam), dry skin types can use milk or oil cleansers (such as Clarins Velvet Cleansing Milk), whilst sensitive skin types should reach for something designed for exactly their skin concern in mind (be it redness or flakiness). Got normal skin? You’re in luck; this skin type can use gel, milk or oil textures depending on preference.
Tip: Your face shouldn’t feel squeaky clean when you’ve finished washing it; this just means that the cleanser has removed too much of your skin’s surface oils which your face needs to stay hydrated.
Try double cleansing
The concept of double cleansing may be relatively new, but we know it’s here to stay. Double cleansing entails washing your face twice, and it’s really effective in getting rid of more stubborn makeup products like long-wearing foundation or waterproof mascara.
A common starting point of a double cleanse is micellar water. The Garnier Micellar Cleansing Water is the OG product to reach for due to its efficacy and budget-friendly price point, then follow with your liquid cleanser of choice.
Use a tool for a deeper cleanse
Your fingers can only do so much when it comes to washing your face, which is where an electric cleansing tool comes in handy. Something like Go Bare Sonic Cleansing Brush is a great product to use if you’re trying to reach deep into your pores – it’s a waterproof silicone device that works with your regular liquid cleanse, and the vibrations actually help to remove up to 99.5% of ick from your skin.
