The Greatest Video Game Fits of All Time

Tekken 3 (1997) 
A former street brawler turned priest, Mexican wrestler King originally entered the ring to raise money for an orphanage he was building. Known for his signature jaguar mask, the so-called ‘Beast Priest’ has worn some killer fits during his time competing in Tekken’s ‘King of the Iron Fist Tournament.’

Still, it’s his jawns in Tekken 3 that really deliver the lethal blow. 

Looking like the hip kids of Shibuya, King’s late-90s streetwear steez has come full circle again in 2020, the Jaguar print sweatpants and tucked tee a staple for hip hop communities across the globe. It also looks like Japanese developer Namco took cues from Reebok’s The Answer 1 for King’s sneakers, both the video game and Allen Iverson’s first silhouette releasing along a similar timeline in 1997. 

An honourable mention also goes to King’s secondary getup in Tekken 4: a traditional buckskin cowboy jacket with dapper white pants and dress boots.

King’s fits are still a straight suplex in modern style. 

Grand Theft Auto: Vice City (2002) 
The kingpin of Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, Italian-American mobster Tommy Vercetti’s vast, neon-hued wardrobe pays homage to our cinematic forefathers. 

Taking cues from drug lord Tony Montana (Scarface) and Henry Hill (Goodfellas), Vercetti’s wardrobe features everything from lush pastel suits (with rolled sleeves for the hot Miami nights) to chalk stripe numbers with oversized collars torn straight from Oliver Stone’s set wardrobe. 

A former member of the Forelli crime family, Vercetti’s earlier style reflected a more modest income. Wearing a turquoise Hawaiian button-down with a classic Miami palm tree print, Vercetti pairs the look with denim jeans and shell toe sneakers reminiscent of the adidas Superstar. 

Preempting his rapid rise from gun-for-hire to Vice City overlord, Vercetti finishes the look with a gold pearl necklace and chunky gold watch, creating a perfect throwback to South Beach in the 1980s.

Max Payne (2001) 
Rockstar’s neo-noir Max Payne is still one of the most stylish video games in existence. Immortalised by his trademark leather jacket, renegade DEA agent Payne travels throughout American in his bloodthirsty quest for vengeance. Pairing the jacket with an autumnal button-down and slim-fit jeans, Payne is no sartorial slouch later in the series. In chapter 7 of Max Payne 3 (2012), he wears a blooming Hawaiian shirt packed with exotic birds and flowers for his missions in São Paulo, Brazil. 

Remember kids, beauty knows no Payne! 

Deus Ex: Human Revolution (2011) 
A cyberpunk action adventure developed by Eidos-Montréal, Deus Ex: Human Revolution follows the story of ex-SWAT officer Adam Jensen. Set in 2027, the rain-sodden streets of Detroit are slick with artificial organs (augmentations) and hyper advanced techwear. 

Enlisting the help of Errolson Hugh’s Munich-based ACRONYM (a label known for their ultra functionality and futurist style), Eidos-Montréal created a classic black trench coat loaded with forward-thinking engineering. 

Inspiring countless imitations online, the monochromatic trench coat was perfectly suited to the sombre cyberpunk noir, the carefully crafted outfit breathing sartorial integrity into a digital space notoriously difficult to realistically animate.
