Travis Scott is the undisputed collaboration king in 2020.
From his psychedelic Fortnite gig to this month’s supersized McDonald’s colab, La Flame and his freewheeling JACKBOYS continue to rage at warp speed.
So buy a ticket and take the ride: this is the dawn of a new rage.
Thrashing the SB Dunk
The Nike SB Dunk Low was the most hyped sneaker on earth in 2019, but it wasn’t until Travis Scott slipped on the sneaker that the SB Dunk truly went nuclear.
Initially teasing the collaboration in the ‘JACKBOYS’ music video, the Dunk arrived in February to plenty of fanfare (and eye-watering resale prices). Composed with paisley canvas, plaid flannel overlays, and rope laces, the most notable design element was the tear-away uppers.
Widely acknowledged across the board as one of the best sneakers of 2020, the luxurious design represented a high watermark for Travis Scott’s footwear collaborations – quite the feat considering his triumphant partnership with the Jordan Brand.
Feeling the need to thrash a pair down at the local skate park? It’ll only cost you around $2,367 on the Australian resale market…
The Highest in the Game
Cactus Jack is well known for his mind-melting live performances (anyone else remember the gigantic mechanical eagle he mounted for Kendrick Lamar’s ‘DAMN’ tour?), but Scott’s cosmic Fortnite gig might be one of his most important yet.
More than 12 million Fortnite players logged in to rage during Scott’s ‘Astronomical’ Fortnite performance, the 28-year-old Houston rapper manifesting as a Godzilla-sized avatar in the aptly named ‘Sweaty Sands’ beach.
Totally tripped-out and intergalactic, the fired-up virtual gig was the perfect digital articulation of Travis Scott’s unique visual language, and looks set to establish a new paradigm for online performances.
Detonating entire planetary systems with his cyborg omnipotence, the ‘Astronomical’ event has become a fitting metaphor for Scott’s real world dominance in 2020.
Making ‘Cactus Trails’
For his Nike Air Max 270 collaboration, Travis Scott enlisted the help of former pro wrestler Mick Foley, and stone-faced satirist Brad Hall, to spruik the so-called ‘Desert Escape Kit’.
Another masterclass in storytelling, La Flame took a silhouette with limited streetwear appeal and elevated it to a coveted must-have item. Tracking all the way back to the 1990s, the faux-worn Air Max 270 was dusted in golden wheat yellows and oily browns emblematic of dry, arid terrain and deserts.
A collaborative oasis for the Air Max 270 silhouette, the ‘Cactus Trail’ left us even thirstier for more footwear colabs from Cactus Jack.
The Cactus McJack
One of the more bizarre link ups in recent history, Travis Scott’s McDonald’s partnership epitomises his ubiquitous place in pop culture.
The ultimate union of two merchandising powerhouses, the supersized colab comes in the form of a limited-edition meal (essentially a Quarter Pounder, fries and Sprite) and a vast amount of paraphernalia including chicken nugget body pillows, a burger tie, slippers, hoodies, tees, and tracksuit pants.
A watershed moment for Travis Scott, and the hip hop industry more broadly, we’re only really lamenting one item missing from the menu: a Cactus Jack hot sauce!
A merchandising heavyweight, chart-topping rapper, and sartorial prophet, Travis Scott’s imagination is still the most interesting place to orbit in 2020.
