Spring Has Sprung: 6 Must-Haves For Self-Confessed Green Thumbs

The garden is calling your name.

It’s officially spring (yay) which doesn’t just mean the arrival of a time ideal for picnics and afternoons spent drinking in the sun, but the ideal season to start sowing the seeds (pardon the pun) in your garden. If you’re thinking of playing host to some citrus, bananas, olives, sage, rosemary, or thyme (among much much more), this is your time to shine! But before you embark on your garden-led adventure, arm yourself with the following:

1. Some good advice is essential. Grab yourself a gardening bible like this tome dubbed Urban Sanctuary that will help to inspire your green thumb ways and even provide a little information on when to plant, what, and even how.

2. You’re about to be spending some decent amount of time out of doors and your best bet of protection (aside from SPF of course) is a wide-brimmed hat to keep the sun’s rays well away from your face and neck. Pop a hat on your head like this raffia number from Country Road and channel coastal grandma chic

3. Prevent any unnecessary injuries in the garden with some decent enclosed shoes built for hard yakka, like old faithfuls by the ever-reliable Blundstone, a workwear brand crafting leather boots since the 1870s (which means they know what they’re doing).

4. So you live in an apartment? That won’t dampen your ability to garden at all! You’ll just need to get your hands on some pots and plants that are suited to staying in rather than out, to pop in some aesthetically pleasing pots like these fancy silver numbers from Georg Jensen

5. If you’ve never heard of gardening in an apron, then this concept is about to change your life. An easy way to protect your clothing from a day spent getting down and dirty (quite literally) in the garden beds is a sturdy canvas apron. This one from Double Oak Mills boasts leather straps and enough pockets to hold your phone while you’re out and about.

6. You’ll have to get rid of that grime and mud caked under your nails somehow! We recommend a decent hand wash that not only smells great but won’t strip your skin after a fair few scrubs, followed by a replenishing hand cream.
