How To Host An Unforgettable Dinner Party

Time to dress up and have some fun at home.

Hosting a dinner party is a perfect way to catch up with friends in an intimate setting. The finer details can be just as important as the menu itself and serve an excuse for you to have some fun and get creative. Deciding on decor, curating a playlist, choosing a theme...you can be as imaginative as you like with your dinner party; you can even pretend and take your guests to another country if you wish! Sydney socialite and dinner party queen Roxy Jacenko says, “It’s all in the décor planning. When I am planning a dinner party I always prioritise colours and florals to make for a wow moment for my guests...and of course, a selection of XRJ candles to match the colour theme!”. For inspiration, just search #dinnerparty on TikTok and Instagram – we are currently obsessing over chef and creative @jessica_nguyen_ whose IG page is a plethora of food and cocktail recipes, brightly coloured table settings and outfits to match. *Images via Instagram @jessica_nguyen_

To help you plan your next dinner party in style, we have put together our failsafe hosting checklist along with some fabulous outfit options and décor ideas.

Checklist:

  • Menu: It’s always a great idea to pick a theme or type of cuisine. Shared plates always work beautifully.
  • Playlist: Never forget a curated playlist to set the mood!
  • Invites: Send out save-the-dates ahead of time so you can be sure all your guests can make it. It’s also a good opportunity to find out any food allergies and dietary requirements.
  • Ingredients: Make a list for what you need ahead of time. Pre-purchase pantry items and then shop last-minute essentials from the farmers market or fruit shop the day of to ensure freshness. Make the most of seasonal ingredients where you can.
  • Drinks: Ask your guests to bring some wine or supply your favourite drop/options to match the theme of your menu. French rosé? Yes, please.
  • Décor: Bland colours are a no-go when food is involved so bring some excitement to the table through linen tablecloths, napkins, candles and flower arrangements.

If the dinner is themed it’s always good to dress the part, but if the theme is loose, playful party dresses that don’t compromise comfort are an easy win.
