When it comes to hosting an unforgettable dining experience, no one does it quite like Alex Cadger. As one of Australia’s most prominent events and catering experts and the founder of The Blonde Butler, we asked Alex to share the scoop on home entertaining and styling trends so your next dinner party is not only delicious but a visual feast for the eyes too.

Top 5 Table Styling Tips For Spring

  1. A light coloured, crisp linen tablecloth will go a long way teamed with linen napkins in your favourite colour.
  2. Make guests feel special with fun and unique napkin rings for each place setting.
  3. Vases of fresh, bright and vibrant spring flowers are a must. Avoid mixed bunches and arrange each variety of flower in their own different sized vases down the centre or around the table. My favourites this season are jonquils, roses and tulips.
  4. Add character with unique table garnishes like black grapes, figs, pears or scallop shells.
  5. Different styles of candles and candle holders in different shapes and heights are great options especially if you’re tight on space.

The Most-Popular Table Trends

“When it comes to dressing dinner party tables in 2022, it’s all about mixing colours, patterns and unique pieces that you wouldn’t normally find on a dining table. This is what gives it a wow factor and makes your table setting not only trending but memorable for you and your guests.”

“There is a movement away from minimalism as people are ready to bring joy onto their table and it’s a great way to make everyone feel energised and happy. I love pairing a fresh or neutral coloured tablecloth with your favourite coloured florals, different styles of candles in varying heights, fresh flowers – either from your garden or store bought – and table garnishes like fruit or shells. Be creative and don't be afraid to try something new!”

“A massive trend I am seeing at the moment is a well-styled grazing table. They always make a huge visual impact on any event you may be throwing. They spark conversations, are fuss free and a delicious way to entertain guests, especially in spring when the weather is glorious. The greatest benefit of having a grazing table is that you also eliminate the stress of having to cook and feed a mass of people.”

The Dining Trends On The Way Out

“Avoid any traditional formal table setting and styling that can be quite intimidating such as white crockery, white tablecloth and white napkins… unless of course you are hosting the Queen!”

“There is a time and place for a traditional plated 3 course dinner, but for the most part, it isn’t as popular as it once was. For me, I like guests to be able to enjoy lots of different dishes throughout their dining experience and not be limited to the one meal dropped in front of them.”

“To ensure your guests have a full sensory experience, offer small bites at the start and then display lots of different dishes down the centre of the table or set up as a styled buffet on a side table. Food always looks better in abundance, so share plates and buffets are both winning formulas at the moment.”

Top Tips For Balance Food Arrangement

“Food has to taste outstanding or it isn’t worth eating! You certainly don’t need to be a Michelin Star Chef to create great looking food. It is also important to have some plating and garnish tricks in your repertoire to elevate the dish.”

  • Add green – if the dish tends to be neutral in colour, elevate the look with greenery like sprigs of dill, pea tendrils or watercress
  • Colour contrast – if your food is dark, select a lighter plate. If it is light food, opt for a bright & vibrant or black plate

Micro herbs – handfuls of micro herbs scattered across a dish will elevate the look. These are available in some of your local fruit and veg stores and Harris Farm supermarkets.

A Dream Dinner Party Looks Like…

“I have fantasised about this dinner party for so long now... Nigella Lawson and I are hosting a lavish dinner for 20 of my nearest and dearest at an orange orchard. I picture a beautiful long table running down the centre of two rows of orange trees with chandeliers lit up and suspended above the table. To contrast the orange colour of the trees I would have white and purple flowers and an abundance of candles on the table, and lanterns also with candles in varying heights displayed on the ground around the table. We’d have live music by Michael Bublé playing amongst the trees and a menu of delicate and fresh dishes with the inclusion of zesty orange!”
