Sock Game: Strong

Socks, well and truly, are a mystery to us. Either it’s famine and we couldn’t find a pair if our lives depended on it, or it’s a flood as they multiply through laundry cycles, gym bags and weekends away. Once considered a ‘dad’ present, they’re now at the top of our list for jolly Old Saint Nick (read: Mum).

So, what to look for in a sock? A pair, to start. A concept we’ve long struggled with (today included).  In your collection, make sure you have an easy-wear, easy-wash cotton blend. Perfect for the warmer months. Come the autumn, you want some wool on hand too.

The key, though, to looking sharp is to be found in a strong sock game.

This Christmas, we’re saying sayonara to regulation-issue navy school socks and plain-as-day dress socks. We’re looking for the big and the bold, the bright patterns and the clashing colours, the ones you couldn’t lose even if you tried. But it’s more than avoiding the game of hide and seek you’ve been playing on the daily. It’s about expression.

“Did I ever tell ya that this here jacket represents a symbol of my individuality, and my belief in personal freedom?” says Nick Cage’s Sailor Jerry in David Lynch’s classic Wild At Heart at every opportunity he gets, to anyone who will listen.

Your socks are your snakeskin jacket.  It’s time to forget the no-show socks, this is all about turning up, about bringing your best no matter the game at hand.

Start from the toes and work it all the way on up. Wear them with sneakers, with loafers, with any kind of kicks. Even slides and sandals, if you’re that way inclined and the dress code permits.

Clash or match, the call is yours. We love a little texture, some ribbing and some knits. If pattern isn’t your thing, go for bold and bright solids. Try some polka dots, some stripes, some argyle, even a little Warhol.

Be sure, though, to show them off. Cuff those pants and let your socks shine.
