When you’re after a mini-adventure, with a side of swimming and cocktails, then Far North Queensland should be your first choice. Why? We’re glad you asked.

The ocean adventures
We’re not just talking snorkelling and diving (although, we recommend those too), there are also kayak turtle tours, kite boarding just off Cairns and stand up paddle adventures on clear, rainforest streams. Plus, if adrenaline is more your style, you can throw yourself down the rapids while white water rafting the furious Tully River.

The Crocodiles (lots of them)
Crocodiles. You’ve got to love them … They literally haven’t change their look since the dinosaurs. Sure, they’re a little smaller now … But you’ll still see four- and five-metre specimens around Port Douglas. Take a boat tour on the lower Daintree to see them sunning themselves on the mud or get up close and personal at Hartley’s Crocodile Adventures where you can come face-to-face with them.

The Barramundi Burgers
It’s a rule. You can’t venture up into FNQ without a cold beer and a Barra burger. Preferably with a view. Or you could always order a bucket of fresh prawns or oysters with a crisp white wine. If national symbols are more your style, visit Watergate restaurant on the main street of Port Douglas and try the kangaroo loin or crocodile san choy bau. On your last night, book a table at Flames of the Forest, where you can indulge in a six-course meal served under fairy lights in the middle of a rainforest.

The jungle boardwalks
When you’re up this north in Queensland, it’s almost a sin not to keep going and visit Cape Tribulation. Despite it’s gloomy name, it’s easy to get to by car or bus tour, and utterly luscious in its beauty. All along the route are fascinating (and free) boardwalk hikes that allow you to walk over mangroves, through rainforests and under creeping canopies in your thongs. For a bird’s eye view (literally) book in for a zipline adventure at Jungle Surfing Canopy Tours and speed your way past heritage rainforest in seconds.

The beautiful hotels
As the cliché goes, ‘there’s something for every budget’ when it comes to laying your head on a pillow in this region. For those watching their moola, the Daintree Crocodylus Village has multi-share rooms in the middle of the Daintree rainforest. Perfect for travelling with your mates. To be a little closer to the action, check out Airbnb where you can find an entire apartment in the middle of Port Douglas from around $80 a night. For luxury bunnies, Thala Beach Reserve offers tree top lodges with views of the rainforest and the sea. Plus, a private beach.
