If you’re anything like us, we’ve all spent this year realising our homes are full of stuff and our wardrobes aren’t serving us.
Just when we were looking for an excuse to clear out the closet, Salvos Stores gave us one. So why not support their brand new initiative, the first ever Second Hand Saturday – this 28th November – to do an edit of the clothing and footwear you no longer wear?
Encouraging people to donate their pre-loved items, Second Hand Saturday is a day for everyone to have a clear out, take stock and give their wardrobe some air.
According to Salvos Stores, the idea behind the day is that, just before the big gifting and shopping period, it’s a chance to think about what we have and what we want to give back. “Second Hand Saturday asks sales seekers to think more sustainably and donate their pre-loved items, making room in their wardrobe for their new purchases. The donated items will then go into the network of 350 Salvos Stores with money raised helping fund community programs.”
CEO of Salvo Stores, Matt Davis, says, “Second Hand Saturday is an initiative that asks Australians to think about clothing waste and to consider what items they could donate for a second life … Items that might be unwanted for some, that can go on and have a meaningful impact on the lives of those in need.”
To make donating even easier, Salvos Stores have partnered with THE ICONIC and Australia Post via the Giving Made Easy program – allowing those with an active ICONIC account to donate clothing and footwear that are in a good condition clothing and footwear that are in a good condition, simply by downloading the pre-paid postage label and sending their pre-loved items via post.
Don’t know where to begin? We asked someone who is around fashion every day, THE ICONIC’s Creative Stylist, Tara Morris, her top tip for doing an edit.
“My advice when clearing out is to hang some pieces on a new rack or lay them on your bed so that you can easily build some new outfits,” says Tara. “Then you can see what’s working and what isn’t. Anything I haven’t worn in months and don’t love, gets donated so someone else can make great outfits with it.”
“It helps me to clear some space and to make room for a new special gem I’ve had my eye on.”
So have a clear out this weekend and pop any clothing or footwear in good-condition that you no longer wear into the post, so that somebody else can love and use them!
