To mark International Women’s Day this year, we asked Kristy Dickinson, Indigenous Australian jewellery designer behind Haus of Dizzy, to pen an open and honest letter to her younger self around how the official IWD 2020 theme #EachforEqual speaks to her.
Dear Lil Kristy,
Welcome to the world...
Now there are going to be lots of ups and downs in this crazy thing we call life but you have that strong Wiradjuri First Nations blood flowing through your veins which will get you through anything and everything.
There are times when you are going to get bullied for being a girl or for being black or not black enough or even not being white enough. It’s going to be confusing and hurtful but you just need to listen to your mum’s advice and be proud of who you are.

I know it sounds crazy but you will someday have your own business and be completely self made. You will also use this business of combining your love for fashion and bright accessories to bring awareness to important topics and help people find their identity and truth and to fight for justice for all the things that you, your mother, your friends and family fought for, and are still fighting for to this day.
Sometimes it may feel like you are not doing enough to help, but then other days you will really see changes happening for your people and equality.
You will work with some of your favourite celebrities, fashion designers and teach workshops at children’s hospitals, Indigenous organisations and juvenile justice centres. You have so much to look forward to and I know that you just feel like a little black girl from the housing commission who will never amount to anything, but you will!
You are a fighter and you will make a difference and be a positive role model to all those young Indigenous people out there who also thought they would never amount to anything.
At 38 you are now about to have your first child - your son ‘Ziggy’, due on March 8, International Women’s Day. You are going to be a single mum and a business woman and you are going to be great!
Now let’s hope he is handy with a pair of pliers so you can get him straight to work at Haus of Dizzy!
