Ana Piteira On 6 Successful Brands And A Newborn Baby

Meet Ana Piteira, the inspiring woman behind Australia’s cult fashion favourites Reliquia Jewellery, Blanca apparel and so much more.

To mark International Women’s Day, we’re shining the spotlight on Ana Piteira, the inspiring woman with multiple successes under her belt, including the PR and communications agency Sueño Communications, as well as Reliquia Collective, the umbrella brand that includes cult fashion favourites Reliquia Jewellery, Blanca apparel, Valet Studio, Respiro and AEYRE. As if that wasn’t enough to keep Ana busy, she recently became a mum to a beautiful baby boy. In between business calls and baby bath times, we managed to catch up with Ana in her coastal Sydney home to find out the secret of her success.

Tell us about your career journey, managing multiple fashion and lifestyle labels, an agency and now a newborn?

“My career journey has been a gradual progression after launching my agency Sueño Communications (then named OMGFIVE) in 2013. My position in the industry allowed me to identify gaps in the market, particularly affordable and well-designed jewellery for young women. From there, it’s been an escalation, adding two more accessory labels, apparel and homewares to the Reliquia Collective family. It’s been a whirlwind!”

“Adding a newborn to the mix has definitely been a challenge, although one we endure with a lot of love and fun moments too. I’m really lucky to have a team of strong and capable women within Reliquia Collective and the agency. I know I can count on them, and they can keep the ship running smoothly when I do have to take those moments out. My mum has also gleefully jumped into the grandmother role, which I am so grateful for. Without these supports, the transition would have been a much greater struggle.”

Why do you celebrate International Women’s Day?
“While society has made great headway in equality, there’s no denying that women around the world are not as recognised or praised for their achievements in work, the community and family life. International Women’s Day is a reminder to pause, reflect and celebrate the remarkable women around us and on a global scale. Women are capable of so much, and I think we need to continue pushing for economic and social development with them passionately leading the way.”

What do you hope that every woman feels when she puts on one of your pieces?
“I hope that every woman feels comfortable – within herself and her body. My desire is that she uses these items of clothing and jewellery as tools for self-expression and development. These aren’t pieces to style once and never touch again, but those that grow with you and surpass genre if you play with them. I also hope that a bright and colourful piece transforms the day, adding joy, contentment and a sense of ease.”

What tips would you recommend to others for achieving their career goals?
“I think my main piece of advice is to have a clear goal and charge for it. Reach out and build the relationships that are beneficial to this. Be unashamed about it, but also respectful of others’ time. Take every relevant opportunity offered to you and charge with it, and always learn from your mistakes. Don’t dwell, but take the lessons and keep moving forward.”

Do you have any advice for new and expecting mums about juggling motherhood and work?
“I’m still learning myself, but the main thing I have learned so far is to be kind to yourself. Don’t put too much on your plate or take on more than you can handle or commit to. If you can, take a step back when it’s getting overwhelming. We have to remember that work and motherhood might be important, but so is our personal wellbeing. Don’t break yourself in order to show up at work – in the office or within the family – every day.”

Do you ever get a moment to yourself?
“Moments to myself are quite rare with a newborn, but I lap up any time I can get. When the weather is beautiful, I like to take a dip and walk along the beach. You might find me playing with a recipe in the kitchen or watching a few episodes of my favourite comedies. Right now, a nap sounds great, too.”

Now that you’re a mother, are there plans to expand into kidswear?
“That is a great question, and you never know – maybe all these late nights will spark a new offering!”
