MAARA Collective: More Than Just A Clothing Line

Founder and Creative Director Julie Shaw on the importance of sustainability and storytelling in fashion.

MAARA Collective is the epitome of women’s designer resort wear – a cohesive collection of swimwear and versatile separates that make you feel like you’re on holiday even in your own backyard; the timeless Alinta One-Piece a perfect option for those looking for beach essentials with longevity; the Lowanna silk skirt a staple favourite to keep on high rotation, long after the season has come and gone. But of course, the brand is so much more than that. Decorated with prints that showcase the talents of Australian Indigenous artists and made with sustainability at the forefront, each piece from MAARA Collective tells its own unique narrative. New to THE ICONIC and part of our Considered Edit, we asked Julie Shaw, founder and creative director and winner of the Australian Fashion Laureate Indigenous Designer of the Year Award 2021, to share more about the messaging behind the brand and why a garment’s story is not something to be overlooked.

What is the significance of the name MAARA Collective?
“MAARA Collective is a women's resort and swim line that celebrates the artistic talents of our Australian Indigenous artists through collaborations and showcases. The word 'maara' refers to hands in my Yuwaalaraay language, and the name 'MAARA Collective' is all about acknowledging the 'many hands' that go into not only the creative and collaborative process but also the supply chains of the fashion industry. I think it is important for our customers to know that so many hands touch a garment before it lands in the hands of the consumer, and I feel that in acknowledging this we can truly begin to understand and realise the value of our garments.”

“Community collaboration ties into the brand through working with Indigenous creatives across many artforms, from weaving to jewellery making and textiles through the commissioning and licensing of artist's prints. This representation of talent also extends into the brand through graphic design, comms, photography and model selections."

"As an Indigenous designer it has always been a dream of mine to share culture through art and fashion, and this dream is being realised through MAARA Collective.”

What is the inspiration behind the latest collection and how do you integrate cultural elements into your designs?
“The inspiration for our current Resort ’22 collection is centred around our feature print 'Tjukula' which has been licensed by Pitjantjatjara artist Lexie Michael of Ernabella Arts from the remote APY Lands of central Australia.”

“This particular print, a stunning representation of the artist's home country depicting variations in the landscape (such as the waterholes, or 'tjukula'), is so dreamy, and it really informed the silhouettes and floaty shapes, inspired by the flowing movement of the print itself.”

“Cultural elements are integrated into the collections through licensing arrangements, where artworks are digitally printed onto silk and linen fabrications, then made into garments produced right here in Australia; the lands from which the artist's stories originate.  We work closely with the artists through consultation and approval processes, in partnership with Copyright Agency, to ensure that the artist's prints are represented in the most appropriate ways and that they are always happy with the final designs.”

What does sustainability mean to you as a brand and why is it important?
“Sustainable and ethical practices are an important part of this brand. We aren't just a 'clothing' line. The prints are carefully and considerately chosen, and the collaborative process takes time, undergoing consultation and approval stages by the artists involved at all stages of the design process to ensure that their artworks and stories are represented in the most culturally appropriate way.”

“Local manufacturing is important to us, as is using sustainable practices within the business where possible. We acknowledge that along with many brands, we are on a sustainability journey, and are constantly researching, learning and evolving. Sustainable practices are inherent within Indigenous culture, and we always aim to continue this ethos throughout our brand.”

Who is MAARA Collective made for?
“MAARA Collective is a brand for everyone. Our pieces are designed for the discerning woman who is looking for something special in her wardrobe, for pieces that have meaning and story interwoven within them. Knowing that her purchase supports artists, as well as the Australian manufacturing industry, is important to our customers. All women are welcome to enjoy and experience our brand and share in Australia's unique and beautiful culture through contemporary fashion pieces.”

What is your favourite look from the collection?
"
My favourite piece right now would be the Lowanna silk skirt in the 'Tjukula' print. Obviously this print is so close to our hearts as we collaborated with the most amazing artist, Lexie Michael. This style is such an elegant piece that will literally stay in your wardrobe for many years as a treasured piece.”
