With the welcome return of physical runways – and the smorgasbord of showgoers serving serious style inspiration – New York Fashion Week Fall 2022 had it all. From the catwalk to the sidewalk, we take a look at the women's designer style cues that’ll be shaping our wardrobes this season and beyond.
The Shows
Proenza Schouler
Those looking to ease back into pre-pandemic dressing, rejoice. Proenza Schouler’s offering saw signature neutrals like olive, taupe and slate grey interspersed with graphic monochrome prints and pops of primary colour. Silhouettes sat effortlessly away from the body while remaining faithful to the figure – think buttery knitwear, cinched waists, ballooning skirts and close-fitting hoods (a wry nod to TikTok’s balaclava obsession?) extending out beneath louche suiting.

Helmut Lang
The fastidious tailoring that underscored Lang’s 90s aesthetic remains steadfast this season, with sharp blazers, overcoats and trousers cut close to the body yet still roomy enough to really live in. Dresses were draped and shaped with flowing sheer panels, while cut-out dresses and peekaboo separates served fall-approved flashes of skin.

Staud
If there’s one thing Sarah Staudinger’s eponymous label has made its calling card, it’s F-U-N. Coloured leather, cut-outs and fraggle textures shine in a riotous palette of tomato red, cyan and bubblegum pink, while shades of saffron, cedar and bordeaux remain in the wings when you want to tone it down. Thigh-high boots, bare shoulders and open backs blur the line between seasons, proving that you never have to say goodbye to summer entirely.

The Street
Like it Loud?
Blistering shades and cacophonous patterns reigned supreme, with showgoers donning a mashup of brighter-than-bright suits, dresses and eye-watering accessories. Green, orange, pink and yellow were firm favourites, while deep chocolate brown proved the perfect non-neutral. Checkerboard everything and harlequin diamonds are key motifs if you’re in the mood to get noticed.

Outside In
Statement outerwear makes cold weather dressing a breeze, with exaggerated tailoring, unexpected textures and bold colours staking their claim to your winter wardrobe. Trench coats and ankle-length dusters played perfectly against deliberately haphazard layering beneath, bringing a whole new meaning to four seasons in one day.

Warm ‘n Fuzzy
Shearling, plush faux fur and fuzzed-out textures popped up on everything from puffer jackets to power boots. Make this trend work for a warmer climate with a shearling-trimmed jacket, furry slides or a teddy fleece bag.

Staying Grounded
Take shoe cues from NYFW’s finest with outdoorsy footwear that skews (fashionably) functional. Trail sneakers and hiking boots provide anchorage to all manner of autumnal outfits, while lug soles, chunky loafers and cleated platforms are still going strong. Want something a little less pragmatic? Calf- and knee-high boots are back, this time in light and bright suede if you’re feeling extra lucky.
