Self-confessed snow bunny? You’re not alone. There are plenty of Australians who may come from a land heavy in sunshine and host a sweet spot for the white powder of the ski fields. But before you hit the slopes, we’ve curated everything you need to know about planning your next snow trip down under, including the best snow gear to invest in.

Where to go

While Australia may not be considered the ultimate in snow fields, that's not to say that we’re a nation without decent skiing destinations. There are a handful of stand-out places to pay attention to if you’re craving a winter holiday, scattered around the southern end of the mainland. Arguably most popular of these is Falls Creek in Victoria, which prides itself on its freeride, freestyle, and slopestyle skiing and snowboarding options. Though most families tend to favour the equally well-equipped New South Wales’ Perisher or Thredbo, both within a day’s drive of Sydney.

What to do

Ski of course! Or snowboard if that’s your weapon of choice. But post (or pre) snow session you’ll find plenty of ways to spend your time – just acquaint yourself with all the local amenities. Falls Creek has really upgraded its apres-ski game these days, with rustic restaurant Elk, and Astra Lodge with its drinking den popular among visitors. In Thredbo sits the pub grub specialist Cascades, also home to a buffet breakfast at the start of the day. Though once dusk arrives, the thirsty tend to descend on Schuss bar, or Thredbo's only après venue, Mumm Alpine Bar.

What to pack

If you’re an avid skier it may well be time for you to invest in some good quality mountain gear. Snow pants and jackets, boots, helmets and snow goggles to protect you from the glare are all non-negotiables on the slopes. But back at your accommodation you’ll still need to be warm – a good quality set of thermals, beanies, and down jackets never go astray. Discover our snow edit and find everything you need for the slopes from the expert outdoor brands like The North Face, ROJO Outerwear, Roxy and more.
