Thanks to our newfound interest in beauty labels, namechecking an acid isn’t that hard. Many of us are well-versed in telling our AHAs from our BHAs and PHAs but aside from being fluent in the lingo, do we actually know what the benefits are when adding ingredients to our grooming rituals? To set the record straight we’ve got the scoop on one of the original complexion enhancers – glycolic acid.
What is it?
As a part of the alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) family, glycolic acid is a chemical exfoliating ingredient which can be derived from natural sources such as sugar cane. Given it’s made up of the tiniest molecules compared to other AHAs, this micro-strength enables the acid to penetrate the upper layers of the skin and gently exfoliate the complexion without the need for scrubbing. This action un-glues the dead cells on the surface of the skin leaving a smoother, more radiant texture.
Benefits
This versatile multi-tasker is adored for its skin brightening properties which takes place by breaking down dead skin cells, fading pigmentation and boosting collagen-remodelling cells (which in turn can help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles). When it comes to these kinds of acids, less is more. Over-exfoliation can wreak havoc on your protective skin barrier so keep your high-strength masks to once a week. Low-dose cleansers on the other hand are gentle enough to be used nightly, but like with all beauty products, always follow the directions on the label, patch test before use and discontinue if there are signs of irritation.
