Why Espadrilles Are Our Summer Holiday Shoe Of Choice

“Dress for the job you want,” we’re told, “Not the job you have.” While we’re all set in the job department, we’re keen to apply this logic to the life we want. More specifically: to the summer holiday we want.

And espadrilles are just the ticket. They’ve got a Talented Mr Ripley feel to them, like they call the Riviera home and, by association, we can too. They are vacation style 101, calling out for a spritz of some kind to be in hand.

The history of espadrilles is sun-drenched and adventure-filled. Simone De Beauvoir wore them as she hiked in search of enlightenment. Coco Chanel and Salvador Dali, too, while they did their respective things. Romy Schneider wore them in the movie we can’t stop watching – 1969’s La Piscine – and Jane Birkin wore the, well, pretty much everywhere.

Whether you run with a wedge or a flat, or they’re dressed with canvas, cotton or something more elaborate, this rope-soles are where it’s at. Go for a pool slider or a more classic style with super sweet lace-up ribbons. However you play it, they’re the slip on, slip off summer-ready sandal .
