Where to Eat in New York

Nothing fancy, just something to satisfy those classic American food cravings

Book a plane ticket if you haven’t already, these places are worth the airfare, plus they’re perfect if you’re on a budget.

Katz’s Delicatessen

It’s been a staple of the Lower East Side since 1888, and aside from switching location (from one side of the street to the other), not much has changed since. The old-school Jewish deli dishes up the biggest and best corned beef sandwiches in town and the best part is, they’re open late making them the best place to stumble into after a big night out.

Frankel’s Delicatessen

If the meat counter at Katz’s looks too terrifyingly busy to even attempt, especially during the lunchtime rush, then you can always get a similar fix at Frankel’s over in Brooklyn. The family-owned and operated restaurant offers all the Jewish favourites, like homemade matzo ball soup, but you really can’t go passed their classic bagel loaded with cream cheese.

Five Leaves

While you’re in the area you may as well pop into Five Leaves for a burger or coffee if you can fit it. The corner restaurant was the brainchild of actor Heath Ledger, who sadly passed away before it opened. They’re the place to head to if the cityscape has left you craving a little sea life.

Nom Wah Tea Parlor

Much like Katz’s deli, this little Chinese restaurant has a big history. Nestled in the crook of Doyers Street aka Death Alley of Chinatown, Nom Wah Tea Parlor has a vintage aesthetic and is as much of a favourite for locals as it is for movie and TV scenes.

Prince Street Pizza

You’ll find decent New York slices on almost every corner but if you’re after a real mouth-watering slab of thick-crust peperoni and cheese, then this is the place to go. Ask for it to go and take a short stroll to the Elizabeth Street Gardens, an empty lot that’s been turned into a public courtyard, a rare find for the big city.

J. G. Melon

And finally, if you must eat a burger at least make it one from this throwback saloon-style pub. Open since 1972, J. G. Melon is famous for their juicy burgers that are so simple but so delicious. Take your time eating and soak in the traditional melon décor, that literally features framed pictures of melons in all stages of being eaten.

Suddenly got the urge to head to The Big Apple even though it’s snow season? Here’s what you should pack...
