Despite the fact that another La Niña seems to be looming not too far away across the Pacific, the longer days and warmer evenings are already pointing to the fact that events season is well and truly upon us. The problem for a lot of guys in particular is that the tried-and-tested combination of a navy suit and chelsea boots begins to get old pretty quickly. To which, we counter: why not try something new this spring? Mens formalwear has never been more diverse, and while you don't need to rock up to your mate's wedding looking like Timothée Chalamet, there's no reason you can't have fun with a few new ‘fits as party season begins. Here are a few winning style suggestions.
Lighten up
Chinos and woollen suits are, for some strange reason, the most typical go-to when it comes to dressing for special occasions, perhaps because many guys tend to lean heavily on one-or-two suits to get them through most formal events they attend, regardless of the season. But there incredible materials out there that look and feel distinctly formal while also embodying a certain spring/summer vibe that lends itself much better to warm-weather wear. If you need a new suit, consider lighter linens, cotton or seersucker fabrics, and pick up some linen shirts while you're at it. Lighter colours play well here too.
Invest in a knitted shirt
Harking back to the golden days of La Dolce Vita and films like The Talented Mr Ripley, knitted shirts are now a common sight on the red carpets of Cannes and Venice every summer, and ever-so-slowly filtering their way into the menswear mainstream once more following the resortwear boom of the last few years. And why not? They're breathable, look effortlessly chic, and lend themselves to layering under a suit, whether in polo or full button-down form.
Diversify your footwear
We're not here to tell you there's no place for your pride and joy R.M. Williams in 2022. They go with just about everything, after all. But that doesn't mean you have to wear them to every event. If the dress code calls for it and the vibes are right, there's no reason you can't pair your suit with some chunky derby shoes, lightweight loafers or even some fresh-out-of-the-box sneakers. Give it a try, and thank us later.
