When you’re staring down a stay in hospital, no matter the procedure, it’s understandable to be a little preoccupied. While you might have the basics down, only those who have gone before you can share the real must-haves. So, in order to compile the ultimate checklist, we asked a host of real-life new parents what items are essential to add to your overnight bag. This is what they said…
1. An extra long charger

1. An extra long charger
This was, without doubt, the number one answer among recent hospital overnighters. An extra long cable like this 2 metre techcessory means it doesn’t matter how far the socket is from your bed. You can put the last thing you want to think about – a dead phone when you need your support network most – out of your mind.
2. Wireless headphones

2. Wireless headphones
While we’re in the tech zone, wireless headphones and earbuds are an item you won’t regret. If you’re there for a scheduled procedure, time between nurse check-ins can drag on. Plus, hospitals can be noisy places around the clock and having calming sounds in your ears makes all the difference when you’re trying to sleep. Speaking of sleep, see also: a black-out eye mask.
3. Lip balm

3. Lip balm
A dry mouth and extremely chapped lips are side effects from a wealth of medications so come prepared with a nourishing lip balm. We recommend a bullet application you can easily reapply without sticky fingers. Always check that your chosen products are pregnancy and breastfeeding safe.
4. An emotional support water bottle

4. An emotional support water bottle
And not just any water bottle…one that’s easily opened with one hand. Particularly key if you’ve had a serious procedure or have had a newborn arrive in your life and need all the spare hands you can get. A large reusable drink bottle will ensure you stay hydrated and can have your beverage of choice on hand at all times. Frank Green water bottles come in a variety of fun colours guaranteed to suit your style and boost your mood, while Stanley cups have a convenient carry handle that’s easy to hold.
6. ‘Nice’ button-up pyjamas

6. ‘Nice’ button-up pyjamas
Because if you have gone in to have a baby, people will inevitably want to take photos – this way you can feel a bit ‘dressed’. Having your own maternity sleepwear that smells like home feels so much nicer than a backless gown for the whole stay, plus the button-down front will make it easier if you’re breastfeeding.
7. Luxe toiletries

The other tips – while excellent – were very much post-birth appropriate and you’ll have to research those yourselves, however, honourable mentions to…
- Silk scrunchies – to keep hair out of your face.
- A fan – for times when it’s too hot
- A microfibre hair towel – lighter than a regular towel and speedy drying
- A dressing gown – for warmth, and privacy on trips to the bathroom
- Your favourite snacks – do we even need to state why?
