The stretch of sand that is Bondi Beach hits peak hour as the sun rises. Just as light breaks, people lap the soft sand, stretch by the shore and surfers paddle out. Bondi, though, is not alone in this tradition. All over the country, the early risers of the nation are starting their day breaking a sweat.
In summer, the days stretch out for what seems like forever and there’s a drive to make the most of the blue skies. The heat, though, is on and sometimes finding the motivation to warm up is lost as the temperature climbs its way to Australian summer heights.
We checked in with Lean Bean Fitness’s founder and trainer Lizzie Bland for her tips on how to keep on trucking in the summer months.
Take it outside
Bland endorses the Bondi early risers (and any wonder, she is one of them).
“Getting up early and watching the sun rise while you squat is so much more rewarding than staring at the gym wall,” she says.
And, there are health benefits too. “The best time to get your Vitamin D is before 9am so get out there!”
Start early, finish early
"The key to keeping up your summer fitness routine," says Bland, is to rise with the sun.
“Train before it gets too hot and also, your resolve gradually decreases throughout the day so when you get invited for a drink after work, it'll be far more appealing than that 6pm workout you'd booked.”

Take it to the water
“Try adding a swim into your workout routine,” says Bland. A little saltwater therapy might be just the thing your summer workout routine needs. “It’s great fitness, plus the cold water is amazing for boosting your circulation. See ya later, cellulite.”
And, be sure to drink more
“Drink more water,” Bland lists as the number one summer workout commandment. “We sweat so much more in summer, and not just when we’re working out. Make sure you have a water bottle with you to sip on all day. Watermelon, cucumber and citrus fruits are full of water so great snacks through the sunny season.”
Bring on those burpees.
