The last 12 months have been a rollercoaster like no other. We yoyoed in and out of lockdowns, but unlike before, the novelty of getting dressed up just to put the bins out had well and truly fizzled. Still, we managed to change out of the sweats and trackpants that saw us through 2020 and we built up an impressive wardrobe collection that heavily featured these fashion trends:
Y2K all the way
This time last year, we predicted that 2021 fashion would look a lot like the 2000s and looking through our current rotation of outfits, we weren’t wrong. We didn’t just dip our toes in with a little baguette handbag – we went full Y2K resurrecting butterfly clips, tie front tops and baggy jeans, thankfully stopping short of capri pants and ultra-wide belts but who knows what next year brings…

Shirts, shirts, shirts, shirts, shirts, shirts (everybody!)
We’ve always loved a good button-up but this year our collection grew exponentially. We started with short-sleeved coords in Instagram’s favourite checkerboard print and terry towel fabrics, then by spring we had all amassed an impressive assortment of crisp-collared long-sleeved shirts to rival any corporate businessman (except ours are much cooler, naturally). Bonus points if you managed to cop one in the grass green shade that has since gone viral, or one pieced together with contrasting fabrics and colours – another It-girl fave.

Cut it out!
By no means a new trend but one we could barely avoid this year, cutaway designs ruled our wardrobe. From party dresses to swimwear and even our winter knits, almost every outfit we picked was missing that little something (in a good way, of course). Peekaboo waists were by far the most prevalent designs forcing brands to think outside the box and get creative with asymmetric shoulder slashes, questionable cut-outs at the hips and other clever skin-showing surprises.

Knitty Pretty
Like butterflies emerging from cocoons, we peeled off our matching sweats from the previous year and found a new comfort in bodycon knit dresses. Soft, stretchy and versatile enough to be dressed up with heels and sandals, or dressed down with sneakers and boots, it’s no wonder we kept these cosy numbers on rotation. From the swirly patterns by House of Sunny to polo collared staples by Bec + Bridge, we’ve got a good feeling knit dresses are here to stay.
