The Very Best Outfits From Met Gala 2021

Fashion’s biggest night out is back and so is the celebrity red carpet drama!

After a one-year hiatus, no thanks to a global pandemic, the Met Gala is finally back! This year, the fundraising benefit for the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York was fashionably late, as it’s usually held annually on the first Monday of May, but it didn’t fall short on serving up the spectacular fashion, beauty and style that the event is best known for. If anything, it gave celebrity stylists more time to curate the best designer clothing for this year’s celebrity guest list inline with the theme ‘In American: A Lexicon of Fashion’.

If previous years are anything to go by, the Met Gala theme was open to interpretation, and thankfully so since the event often sparks trends that find their way into our own personal style, and there’s only so much red, white and blue, stars and stripes patriotism we’d be willing to embrace. Instead, celebrity guests graced the Met Gala red carpet wearing some incredibly extravagant outfits – questionable to the brief but great regardless – that we’d be more than happy to work into our everyday wardrobes. So if you catch us on Zoom wearing the latest designer dresses and gowns, you know why!

First to turn heads was Kendall Jenner wearing a custom Givenchy jewelled dress. The sheer number made a strong case for the return of the naked wedding dress (and shapewear worthy of showing off), but while we wait for special occasions to return, we’ll instead be inspired to add designer jewellery to our Wishlist for a little WFH glamour.

Lil Nas pulled off not one but three whole regal outfits designed by Donatella Versace for his first Met Gala appearance and TBH, for our first event after lockdown, we might just do the same. Like a real-life Matryoshka doll, he stripped off an ornate satin cape to reveal a gleaming gold suit of armour, and beneath that, a crystal bodysuit detailed with Versace’s signature house print. Talk about an entrance.

Other honorable mentions go to Billie Eilish for looking like a real-life Disney princess, Iman for not-so-subtly making social distancing at events a whole lot easier in a feathered Harris Reed gown, and Timothée Chalamet for rocking up in sweatpants and Converse shoes and embracing comfort dressing even post-lockdown.
