The Ultimate Guide To Bleaching Your Hair For Men

Here’s how to do it right, according to a hair expert.

From Ryan Gosling’s platinum mop in Greta Gerwig’s Barbie to the Targaryen family’s white-blonde hair in House of the Dragon, bleached hair is set to have a major comeback this year – both on and off the big screen. Seth Rogen, Pete Davidson and Kanye West have all been known to make a strong case for the blonde top over the years. And although this trend isn’t for the faint-hearted, if you’re ready to change up your look, bleach blonde should definitely be on your radar.

We spoke to Aveda’s Hair Educator, Mathew Wickham, to find out what you need to know before going platinum.

Is bleaching your hair at home ever a good idea?

“This is one of the most challenging hair colours to get right. It’s a balance between getting the blonde light enough and maintaining healthy hair. Having the colour lift evenly is a skill. And then you must know colour theory on how to neutralise unwanted warmth and create the perfect shade. A hairdresser will give you the best result.”

How do you find the right hairdresser to take you platinum?

“Social media has made it super easy to look at a salon or artist's work before you commit. Start to research salons on social media for your perfect blonde shade. If you have darker hair, you’ll want to find a salon that understands how your hair will lift. At Aveda salons, we have education on blonding and our artists are all well trained.”

Does bleached hair suit everyone?

“That bleached hair look isn’t going to look natural on most people – only 2% of the world’s population have naturally blonde hair – but many more are opting to go blonde. It can be a real statement if you get the shade just right.”

Who shouldn’t bleach their hair?

“It must suit your lifestyle, hair type and schedule. Ask yourself if you’re in an industry where you can rock platinum locks. Is your hair strong enough to go for this big change? Can you afford the time and money to visit the salon regularly?”

How do you care for platinum hair?

“With bleaching, you are removing your natural colour from your hair. This can make the hair weaker. But technology on how to treat damaged hair has gotten so smart in recent years. I recommend a bond-building product to add new bonds and strengthen and protect your hair. I recommend Aveda’s Botanical Repair collection, including the shampoo, conditioner and treatment. That along with a corrective blonde treatment or shampoo and you will have the best from your blonde locks.”

Do you need to use different products after bleaching your hair?

“It is likely yes. Repair and tone maintenance are now going to be part of your hair care routine. You may also find that your styling routine changes as your hair texture can change. Hydrating products like the Aveda Nutriplenish Leave in Conditioner Spray will hydrate and protect your hair from any hot tools.”

How do you maintain bleached hair?

“A good hairdresser will make sure you are ready for your new commitment. Your colour needs touching up once a month to avoid issues with lightening. The heat from your head helps the roots lift. If the hair is longer then the application is harder. This is going to take longer and most importantly cost more. You will need to use a corrective shampoo at home. Toners last about a month but gradually fade each wash. A purple colour will get rid of yellow and blue is to get rid of orange tones.”

How often do you recommend getting roots touched up?

“A strict monthly visit is recommended. You also need to be comfortable with the roots as you can’t get it done too often because this can cause damage from overlapping. Most of my clients over the years have loved their colour even more once a bit of root has come through.”
