David Chase’s melancholic mobsters irrevocably changed the entire course of television when The Sopranos first premiered in 1999.
The second-most streamed HBO show in lockdown, the epic series has enjoyed a mighty resurgence of late - the blood-soaked spectacle producing the perfect panacea to the real world. However, it’s not just the eye-watering narrative arcs and thumping soundtrack that’s enraptured us all over again. From Tony Soprano’s luxe bathrobes to Silvio Dante’s meticulous pinstripe suits, The Sopranos’ wardrobe is utterly killer.
Join us as we take a look back at three of New Jersey’s finest!
Tony Soprano
From bellowing floral button-ups to clean Gucci loafers, Tony Soprano’s vast wardrobe is befitting for the boss of the New Jersey family. Featuring a hefty rotation of Genelli, Burma Bibas and Nat Nast, Tony’s satin bowling shirts and huge pleated trousers became the sartorial extension of his alpha male machismo.

Still, one outfit has routinely wreaked havoc on our minds since the pilot episode: the luxurious, soft cotton bathrobe.
Worn during his morning ambles down the driveway or aboard his boat (Stugots!), Tony’s robes became more and more impressive as the show progressed, from oversized print plaid robes to fluffy, high-end maroon-striped numbers.
Despite his expensive taste, Tony Soprano was well-aware of the Italian-American mobster stereotypes, his wardrobe often reflecting the so-called ‘everyman’ aesthetic again rearing its head in men’s fashion today. Knit polos, pleated trousers, Carhartt pullovers and weekend sweatsuits tied to Tony to New Jersey’s more working-class roots.
Just remember, ‘the Don doesn’t wear shorts!’ (according to Carmine Lupertazzi, anyway).

Anthony Junior
AJ’s sartorial attitude frequently came to preempt the kind of existential traumas he would face later in the series.
With a penchant for metal band garbs, including Pantera (Official Live: 101 Proof, 1997) and Marilyn Manson (The Beautiful People, 1997) tees, as well as mean Slipknot windbreakers, AJ’s monochrome wardrobe articulates his precarious, disillusioned place in the world. An arc that finally reaches its apex with an ominous reading of W.B. Yeats’ The Second Coming.
Metal tees aside, AJ has brief success playing junior football, and oversized gridiron jerseys, baseball caps, and Fear Factory beanies provide insulation for the cold Jersey winters.
Silvio Dante
Tony’s consigliere and proprietor of Bada Bing strip club, Silvio Dante, has a garish style as lethal as his death stare.
Unlike the fledgling foot soldiers perennially wrapped in FILA and adidas tracksuits, Silvio has proven his worth, and his wardrobe reflects this.

With his signature coiffed hairdo, Silvio wears a kaleidoscope of bowling shirts, from faux-snakeskin to bold mismatched printing to Vegas checkerboard fits. Statement oversized pinstripe suits again extend the shadow of his browbeating personality, with more subdued numbers (like two-button cream suits) perfectly coherent with the throwback #officecore sentiments of contemporary menswear.
Like Tony, Silvio’s bling contributes to the fundamental sartorial hierarchy of the family. Sovereign rings, watches and gold bracelets all flicker in the seedy iridescent lights of Bada Bing – just make sure they’re gold!
Still having doubts over Silvio’s maximalist style? Fear not! Actor Steven Van Zandt reportedly loved his wardrobe so much, he took every item home at the conclusion of each season!
