Rumour has it, Francis Ford Coppola’s The Godfather taught the mafia how to dress. It’s no surprise, really. Mafia films have been inspiring the sartorial zeitgeist for years with gaudy suits, slick tracksuits, and the obligatory morning bathrobe.Â
To celebrate the upcoming release of David Chase’s The Many Saints of Newark, we thought we’d revisit some of the most lethal wise guy 'fits of all time.Â
Welcome to ‘The Family’.Â

Sam ‘Ace’ Rothstein, Casino (1995)Â
A lurid, rollicking ride through Martin Scorsese’s vision of Las Vegas, Casino celebrates the bold cuts of 1970s fashion with ruthless precision.
Recently celebrating its 25th anniversary, Casino is still dropping jaws all these years later, and you can pretty much take your pick among all the egomaniacal fits on display during the film’s eye-watering three hours.Â
Still, it’s the explosive (pun intended) looks of Robert De Niro as Sam ‘Ace’ Rothstein that really deliver Scorsese’s opulent, ostentatious mise-en-scène. Who can forget Ace’s gaudy coral and apricot suit that makes a short cameo under the Vegas sun moments before it’s incinerated in the 1981 Cadillac Eldorado.

An honourable mention also goes to Ace’s powder blue suit sans dress pants. What better way to keep the crease in your pants crisp before an important meeting? Surely you can find a way to incorporate that technique into your next Zoom meeting!Â

The costume department was issued $1 million for the Casino wardrobe. It’s not surprising, given that Ace was based on the real-life character that was Frank Lawrence ‘Lefty’ Rosenthal, who reportedly stunted looks even more neck-cranking than De Niro!Â
Madone!Â

Tony Soprano, The Sopranos (1999 – 2007)Â
Billowing bowling shirts, luxe bathrobes, Gucci loafers and pendulous Rolex, Tony Soprano’s wardrobe across The Sopranos six seasons is still killer. Everybody’s favourite melancholic mobster, Tony’s sense of style was certainly not as sodden as his mood, the New Jersey mob boss concealing his ever-expanding waistline with luxe silk shirts and khaki chinos.Â
An elevated expression of the New Jersey ‘everyman’ style, Tony Soprano’s garbs still retain a cult following within the Internet’s style-savvy enclaves, countless IG accounts and op-ed’s a testament to the boss’s enduring legacy.Â

Henry Hill, Goodfellas (1990)Â
Another Martin Scorsese mobster tour de force, Goodfellas follows the story of notorious gangster Henry Hill (Ray Liotta) and his uncompromising rise to the top. Hill serves as the sartorial and narrative lynchpin to Scorsese’s depiction of NYC’s mean streets, the Italian-Irish Brooklynite offering us a snapshot of the borough in the 1960s and 1970s. Spearpoint collars, ivory silk sports jackets and alligator tassel loafers serve to aesthetically reinforce Hill’s rise to power, the intrepid 70s look recently enjoying a resurgence among style circles in 2021.Â
Better yet, we don’t have to burn a hole in our wallets to recreate the opulent milieu of NYC in the 60s and 70s, as Hill also stunted classic informal looks with navy adidas tracksuits and clean two-toned short-sleeve knits.Â
