The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air is Still the Ultimate Style Guide

Flip your wardrobe upside down!

The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air was a stylistic tour de force in the 1990s. Airing on NBC for six seasons, Will Smith and the crew in Los Angeles played a huge role in being able to take hip hop culture to the mainstream, especially when it came to popularising trends that are still empowering streetwear today.

Now with the show’s reboot, Bel-Air scheduled to arrive on February 13, we thought we’d take a look back at all of the show’s freshest 1990s outfits that we still can’t live without. And yes, it’s going to be near impossible for the reboot to trump the style credentials of the original.

The Statement Caps
Nothing says The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air like Will Smith’s eye-watering collection of fluorescent headwear. From kinetic print snapbacks to vintage Billabong five panel caps – which he somehow managed to get his hands on all the way from the Gold Coast – there’s no shortage of hat inspiration here. To this day, we still love the throwback caps from organisations like the Pittsburgh Crawfords (the Craws), who were one of the first African-American baseball teams.

The Canadian Tuxedo
Once relegated to the realm of regrettable outfits worn by celebrity couples from the noughties, double denim is now back on in the 2020s. The Fresh Prince offers plenty of out of the box compositions which steer away from classic washed denim, like his crimson combination worn with a red baseball cap. All you’ll need is a pair of Air Jordans to set off your look!

The Sweater Vest
Believe it or not, Will Smith is not the only fly guy in Bel-Air. Carlton Banks’ numerous sweater vests have gone from satirical punchline to straight-faced fashion statement in recent years, with the preppy look extolled by fashion icons like Harry Styles and Ryan Gosling. Gaudy knits and restrained layering was the modus operandi for Banks, but the bow-ties and over-the-shoulder cardigans can stay in the 90s.

Socks and Sandals
Remember when Will Smith wore the socks and sandals combo to Hugh Hefner’s Playboy party in the episode ‘Fresh Prince After Dark’ (1993)? Reinvigorated in more recent times by hip-hop royalty like Tyler, the Creator, the socks and sandals look has been exhumed thanks to high-end footwear brands legitimising the movement. As they say, give credit where credit is due: Big Will was all over it decades ago.

Men’s Crop Top
The men’s crop top has stormed into vogue as of late, as the style has been celebrated by figures like Kid Cudi, who has also experimented with dresses and other circuit-breaking looks free from antiquated gender constraints. Will Smith’s Philadelphia 76ers crop top was way, way ahead of its time, with the look officially having debuted in the episode, ‘Homeboy, Sweet Homeboy’ (1990).

Neon Tracksuits
Long before Kimye, Will Smith was doing the heavy lifting when it came to hyping up the validity of the humble tracksuit. From shell suits to simple sweats, he extended the aesthetic vocabulary of 1980s hip-hop, modernising the look with his impressive vault of Air Jordans (particularly the Air Jordan 5). Whether it was banana yellow, turquoise or more muted collegiate fits, Smith’s tracksuit game was always a wardrobe highlight in the series.

1990s Prints
The wild prints of the era in question were not for the faint-hearted. Jagged, expressionistic linework and bold colour blocking tested the technological fidelity of our TV screens and ushered in a new era of playful graphic experimentation. In episode ‘Day Damn One’ (1990), Smith literally flips the script on his formal school jacket, turning it inside out to reveal the loud paisley print beneath. Legendary.
