The Best Rainy Day Docos To Watch For Snow Inspiration

Get winter ready.

There are invariably two different types of people when it comes to revelling in the winter months. There's those who huddle away from the cold, praying for the swift onset of sun, sea and sand, and those who live for the chill. Those who, at the briefest suggestion of snow and sleet in the air, pack the car and spend every waking hour on whatever frozen slope they can find.

Those sorts of people need little motivation to spend hours driving to and from Australia's very few alpine regions. But some need that little extra push down the mountain, so to speak, and lucky for you, there's plenty of inspo to be found online from the comfort of your couch. Covering everything from skiing to snowboarding and mountaineering, we've picked 3 of our favourite docos that'll give you the shot in the arm you need to experience everything nature has to offer, no matter the temperature.

Here are 3 of our favourites to check out right now.

14 Peaks

Netflix documentary 14 Peaks might well be one of the wildest extreme sports documentaries we've ever seen, not just because of what its subject, mountaineer Nimsdai Purja, accomplishes, but because of the sheer drive and willpower he shows throughout. In 90 gorgeously shot minutes, we see Purja seek to break the record as the quickest man ever to summit every 8000m mountain. You'll be left itching to strap on your very own crampons.

Foothills: The Unlinked Heritage of Snowboarding

Patagonia documentary Foothills examines the unlikely heritage of a sport we associate with beanies, baggy pants and puffer jackets. Revealing that there's far more history behind the pastime than we thought, Foothills takes a look at the people of Turkey’s Kaçkar Mountains, who have pioneered a unique style of boarding for both work and play for over 300 years.

The Last Hill

While the archetypal Australian ski experience is one of packed chalais, huge chairlift lines and expensive gear, The Last Hill is more an ode to keeping things simple. In it, a group of skier/snowboarder friends cycle to Reno, Nevada to California's Sierra Nevada, looking to do nothing more than discover new slopes, talk absolute nonsense and discover a little adventure. It's a reminder of what's to be gained from leaving your front door and seeing where the road takes you.
