Style Tips We Learned from Our Favourite ‘90s Sitcoms

It’s back to the future with these fashion faves.

They say that fashion goes in cycles and that can only be a good thing because, if nothing else, it means that all those hours we’ve spent watching reruns haven’t been in vain. Find out what our favourite throwback shows taught us about style...

Saved by the Bell, NBC (1989)

Saved by the Bell (1989-1993)
Teenage comedy angst ruled the hallways in this school-age sitcom, and fashion-wise, these ridiculously good-looking kids loved all-American style. From faded Tommy Jeans and vests over pastel t-shirts to stonewashed denim and triangle bikinis, they wore it all.

Fresh Prince of Bel Air (1990-1996)
For six years Will Smith brought us a dizzying array of coloured sweats and printed shirts in his role as the Fresh Prince. He taught us that bold is better, patterned shirts can add to any outfit, and a pair of overalls can add instant cool. The basics were there way back in 1990.

Friends, NBC (1994)

Friends (1994-2004)
You just can’t beat the influence of the ‘Rachel’ hair style, but apart from the haircut that launched a million copycat ‘dos, these six 30-somethings also made fashion waves. Think high-waisted jeans, white T-shirts, and denim shirts, not to mention the shoestring strap slip dresses and chunky shoes. Classic.

Sex and the City, HBO (1998)

Sex and the City (1998-2004)
For a sitcom that spanned 94 episodes, about four single girls in New York, it’s impossible to sum up all the style tips we learned. But one item above all typifies the SATC girl… stilettos. From statement styles to open-toe heels, some entire episodes revolved around a pair of shoes – missing Manolos anyone?
