Three decades ago, Jerry Seinfield gave us sneakers and jeans and our world cracked open just that little bit wider. But this awakening didn’t stop with Jerry.
There was Elaine, the first lady of Seinfeld. She was loud, unabashed and unafraid in an oversized blazer and floral-print, prairie-inspired dressed with college-ready socks and brogues.
Not that much later, our friend Rachel Green gave us slip dresses over T-shirts, and mum jeans on someone who wants’ (yet) a mum, while Will Smith as Fresh Prince rocked basketball shirts on the daily.
And these are what-to-wear that we grew up on.
Americana, thanks to the all-seeing, all-being influence of US pop culture, was our ticket out of here. For us, it was the universal language of the future, of freedom and possibilities weren’t our school uniforms. The American Dream – no matter who us at the helm of the actual country – is something we have all bought into. Even if by osmosis (there were, after all, 10 seasons of FRIENDS).
They were us – or, who we wanted to be. They were – all of them – on a journey of self discovery, a search for new frontiers. Theirs was a world of rent-controlled apartments, belonging and denim on denim. Classic blue jeans with a white top. Western boots and basketball tees. There were the big-name brands who were delivering the brief before it even was one: Calvin, Tommy and Co.
