This year the aim of the Levi’s Pride collection is to bring awareness to and educate others on pronouns. We asked a few of our friends to try out the collection and help us all understand a little more about the importance of identity. Here, we chat to Sydney artist Bhenji Ra @newgenderwhodis...
Can you explain why peoples’ correct pronouns are so important?
"Acknowledging and committing to call folks by their correct pronouns not only affirms their gender identity but tells them that you see them, their experience and are committed to supporting them in this world that often tries to erase trans and gender non conforming people.”
Have you ever not fitted into peoples’ preconceived notions of gender?
“Growing up I struggled to find where I stood within western concepts of gender binaries, who I was never felt like it could fit within something so rigid. It took a long time before I could come into myself and realize that language, identity and who we are have the potential to grow and expand beyond the western world's conventions.”
Has anyone used the wrong pronoun for you and if so can you describe how that feels?
“Yes, so many times, it's hurtful. Especially when you’ve known them for so long or explicitly told them how you want to be addressed and why that’s important. As soon as I’m misgendered I feel erased, as if who I am is not what others believe or perceive.”
Obviously we’re all about dressing however makes you feel good! How do you like to dress?
“I love serving a natural look! Especially since I’m known for performing, when you give it natural and easy, the more glam looks hit different. I mean I love both but finding the relationship between the two keeps my spirits balanced.”
Can you tell us from experience how important it is for someone to be accepted for who they are, and affirmed as such?
“So much in this world tells us that we don’t exist, that our lives don’t matter and that somehow we are less than, when that same rhetoric is practiced by people we know, family, friends, colleagues, it leaves us with little room for imagining ourselves into the future. Affirming who we are tells us that we do exist and will keep existing into the future. It’s a commitment to our freedom and lives and wanting more for us.”
Which is your favourite Levi’s Pride design from the collection?
“I love the soft flare jeans, they fit so perfect. They have a beautiful nostalgic feminine energy and I feel like...light and agile when I'm wearing them. I wanna dance in these!”
What do you hope for the future?
“I hope we all, not only trans and gender non conforming, keep pushing the binaries of normativity and imagining new language, new worlds of possibility where everyone exists and everyone is affirmed. Nothing in this world is ever static, especially who we are and we should all invite the change of pronouns, shift of language and the multitudes of gender expression as a virtue of our society not a burden.”
