For many Australians, a thrilling fortnight of tennis is the shiniest silver lining we can look for as we head back to reality each January. And this year’s Australian Open certainly didn’t disappoint. With imperious displays, legendary comebacks, records broken, and more on-court drama than *some* Days of Our Lives episodes, these are the 2022 Aussie Open moments we’re reliving in the aftermath of four blockbuster finals.

Ash Barty Makes History
What a joy it was to watch homegrown hero and international superstar Ash Barty waltz her way to the final without dropping a set. The first Aussie to win a singles grand slam title on home soil since 1978, the world No.1 dispatched all challengers in clinical fashion before almost impossibly coming back from 5-1 down in the second set of the final to clinch the win. Go, Ash go! Now a winner on all surfaces, this could be our Ash’s year to start stacking some serious silverware, and with a perfect start to 2022 in her pocket, we wouldn’t put it past her.

Nadal Celebrates Number 21
After last night’s breathless marathon of a final for the ages, Nadal is officially the most decorated men’s singles Grand Slam player of all time… at just 35 years of age. Against the odds, and facing the divisive but undeniably entertaining Medvedev, Rafa did things the hard way on his way into the history books. Again. Between them, the ‘big three’ of Nadal, Federer and Djokovic share 61 Grand Slam titles and while time slowly catches up on them, it appears that last night’s runner-up in Daniil Medvedev is best poised to challenge their legacy. Here’s to less yelling at the umps and more champagne tennis. Who are we kidding? We love it all.

An All Aussie Affair
The talk of the tournament started with political undertones surrounding he who shall not be named* before quickly being stolen by our favourite reality TV series-worthy tennis personality (Keeping Up With the Kyrgios’, anyone?) and his childhood friend who also happens to be very good at tennis. In Nick Kyrgios and Thanasi Kokkinakis, Australian tennis has found its latest great entertainers. And not just for their antics, as the duo went on to win an all-Australian doubles final against the impressive pair of Matthew Ebden and Max Purcell. You may not love every aspect of their game, but it’s hard to argue with sold out arenas and silverware.
