Just How Good Are B Corp Brands?

B the Change. What you need to know about certified B Corporations.

We’d like to introduce you to another way that for-profit companies are using their business for good. Certified B Corporations are paving the way to prove that people can use profits and business growth as a force for greater change. We did the research and here’s what you need to know.

What does the B Corps label mean?

Unlike traditional corporations that prioritise financial profitability, certified B Corporations identify their impact on the wider community and the environment, and use their profits to do good. The official definition, as provided by B Lab, the nonprofit behind B Corps, states “Certified B Corporations are businesses that are meeting specific standards of verified social and environmental performance, public transparency, and legal accountability to balance profit and purpose. B Corps are accelerating a global culture shift to redefine success in business and build a more inclusive and sustainable economy.”

How do businesses become B Corps certified?

Businesses must undergo a rigorous certification process to sport the B Corps stamp of approval. Their practices are vetted by a third-party to ensure they’re up to standard and are actually a good or socially responsible business, and not just greenwashing, which has become more apparent with the rise of interest in sustainability. Companies must also be willing to make their results transparent so you can see the score of any B Corps on the official B Corp directory.

What are some examples of B Corps brands?

Since the first company was certified in 2007, more and more brands across all kinds of industries have joined the B Corps movement. At THE ICONIC, we have a number of B Corps in our Considered edit including Klean Kanteen, Outland Denim, Patagonia and labels from Australian Brand Alliance. The list will keep growing as brands continue their own journeys towards sustainability.

Why is supporting B Corps a more sustainable way to shop?

Certified B Corps use the power of business to address social and environmental problems. These businesses are working towards reduced inequality, lower levels of poverty, a healthier environment, stronger communities and the creation of quality jobs with dignity and purpose, so by choosing to spend your money with them, you are helping to support their mission for greater good.
