Let’s not overcomplicate the intro. Flight Facilities are back in a big way and fresh off the back of their new album, FOREVER, are taking flight for the first time in a minute. To celebrate, we tapped the legendary Sydney duo to chat about two things the boys are well-versed in: good vibes and high altitude. Read on at your leisure. *Hero image via Instagram @daniel_nadel_photography
Congratulations on the recent release of your sophomore album FOREVER. For some fans it might have felt that long between records – I’m confident they now feel it was worth the wait – but how long was FOREVER in the works and how are you feeling about it now that it’s been out there for a couple of months?
Jimmy Lyell: We never thought it would be seven years between albums but here we are. We toured pretty hard off the back of the first album and then I had a kid which slowed things down a little. It’s a massive relief to have it out there in the world. There is so much work that goes into an album that generally does not make it onto the album, so it’s a weight lifted off the shoulders when it finally drops.
Hugo Gruzman: The name is no coincidence, we really did take Forever to write the album. Some of the tracks started as demos as far back as 2013 and 2014. We tinker so much on the song until we cant listen to the songs anymore – that’s when we know it’s ready to release!
Thankfully, live music is finally back on the cards. Just how much are you looking forward to taking flight once again?
J: It’s no secret we have missed live touring. We tend to write music that we intend for dance floors in some way or another and to miss that part has been tough. Things are turning the corner here in Australia and it’s time to tour again. We have just built a brand new live show in readiness for this Australia tour kicking off 19th March!
Are there any tracks from the new album that you’re particularly looking forward to sharing live?
H: We’re putting together the new live show as we speak. We’re quite excited about how we’ve arranged some of the new ones, particularly the opening track of the show… that’s a surprise for now.
J: Forever has been connecting every time we play it so can’t wait to see it among our home crowds.
For anyone that hasn’t experienced a Flight Facilities show, how would you describe that live journey? At one end of the spectrum you’ve got an in-flight safety demonstration and at the other, dancefloor pandemonium.
J: Flight Facilities music was built on soft synths and sample pads, but it’s evolving with more analogue and live instrumentation, and relying less on knobs and buttons. I think this show’s visual experience will hopefully be a massive step for us.
H: Yeah, we’ve definitely dabbled in both ends of that spectrum and will be enforcing those highs and lows this time around. Let’s say the experience will be more akin to a mid-air dancefloor; cruising along in sonic ecstasy, while sliced in with moments to have your tea and refreshments. Whatever that means.
What is it about flying that inspired you to intertwine the concept so deeply into your music and performance?
J: Well Flight Facilities was originally an airline operating out of Merimbula Airport decades before we came along. It was actually Hugo’s grandfather Laurie running the show there.
H: He did everything from charting planes between Sydney and Merimbula to running shark patrols and bushfire spotting services, as well as search and rescue operations. The name and branding is exactly what it once was back then and naturally fell into place as we started releasing music together.
Your track MOVE accompanies visuals for our latest Sport campaign: Love The Way You Move. Aside from the obvious dancefloor antics, what do you guys enjoy doing to stay active?
J: Living up north I lean towards surfing to get my activity in. We actually just DJ’d down at the Wave Pool in Melbourne which was so fun.
H: General DJ activities. Spinning discs keeps me fit.
What are some of the essential features of a running/workout/get sweaty playlist?
J: It needs a solid beat, first and foremost. Not an unforgiving 140bpm abrasive techno track, nor a snoozy downtempo song either, something right in the middle – in the sweet spot will do.
H: Maybe throw in some classics from your formative years, be it a track that you may have listened to more times than not while being active. ‘Knights of Cydonia’ by Muse is a bit of a guilty pleasure that fits the bill here.
Can you name a song or artist that’s guaranteed to get you moving?
H: Lately it’s been ‘World’ (Hold On) by Bob Sinclair, it’s a track that always gets the desired effect. It’s certainly having a moment right now.
Off duty and out of your pilot uniforms, describe an outfit you’d expect to spot the other in.
J: Hugo in jeans, a blue-ish shirt, and definitely a pair of Converse. Simple and effective.
H: Jimmy will be more summer casual, some loose pastel fits in a warm environment – and definitely no shoes.
