Shape Shifters: The Trend To Make You Love Wearing A Bra Again

With lockdown rules easing, it’s time to have fun with the hidden styles in your wardrobe.

After weeks of life at home in sweats and sportswear, we never thought we’d miss having to put on something structured again, that is until Senior Stylist Ashley Syne showed us how to work the Shape Shifters trend.

Now that lockdown rules are easing and we’re allowed to be a bit more social (even if it is still online), we’ve found ourselves moving away from the softer, homely styles that we found solace in during isolation, and reaching straight for the hard stuff, like leather, lace and PVC, to excite the senses.

As the name suggests, the trend is all about shifting shapes. “It’s a juxtaposition of textures that complement each other. Femine meets grunge,” Ash explains, like if the trend came with a soundtrack it’d be “a little punk and grunge mixed with female vocals for that feminine edge. Anything from Paramore would be the perfect example!”

“The leather pieces are not your average biker jacket, the cut is more oversize, boxy almost, maybe even cropped,” Head of Women’s Style, Nicole Adolphe adds, “pants take on more of a paper-bag or tapered silhouette rather than a skinny leg, the short is wide and long, the sheer blouse has a statement sleeve and then it's the marrying of these shapes within the one outfit that is key to this trend.”

Now we know what you’re thinking, wearing a bra as a top might turn some heads, but Ash’s advice: “Just own it! By mixing feminine things like lingerie and organza with rock-chick leather, you can really hone in on your inner goddess!”

“It’s definitely more of an evening look, but can be pared down to wear during the day,” she continues, just by adding a statement leather jacket to the simplest jeans and tee combo can elevate your look to Shape Shifter status. And of course, never forget the icing on the cake: accessories! “Silver hardware, statement shoes and diamante earrings – that little something can add some sparkle to your look.” As for the colour palette, “Black is definitely the main component, but I love to mix this up with soft feminine neutrals to add a little colour.”
