Early morning adventures to our local cafe, park and station over the past week or so have taught us a few things. First and foremost, no matter how good the switch from daylight savings is for our sleep cycle, we’d trade it in an instant for an extra hour of sunshine after work. And secondly, that puffer season is well and truly on its way. As such, we thought it would be a good time to wrap up the best puffer jackets around as well as a few styling tips for getting the most out of everybody’s favourite cold weather topper.
Those keen for (or particularly susceptible to) the winter chill are already ahead of the game, sporting puffer vests effortlessly as they go about their autumn days. As far as practical climate control is concerned, a sleeveless puffer jacket is the perfect choice. For days when it’s cold but not that cold, team your puffer vest with activewear or layer with a sweatshirt or hoodie for lowkey vibes.
If the Northern Hemisphere winter just gone is anything to go by, cropped puffer jackets could be set to dominate street style through the cold months ahead. Adding a cropped puffer (like those from P.E Nation) to your winter rotation offers a totally different set of fashion parameters to push with new elements of shape, structure, layering and accessories to consider. Another way to break away from the crowd (as is currently breaking the internet) is to lock in a leather puffer jacket as your statement winter piece. Arriving in leather and faux leather this season, it’s a mash-up of winter’s heaviest hitters; an all-time classic meets the new kid on the block. In both instances, the mood is more in the vein of laid-back luxe than it is outdoor, so style accordingly. We’ll be wearing ours with our favourite ribbed singlets, skirts and knits (subbed for high-waisted pants when the cold really hits), and dressing up the look with statement jewellery and accessories.
For the full puffer experience few do it better than the OGs of outdoor wear: The North Face. Named after Mount Everest’s sister peak in Nepal, a Nuptse jacket is a certified favourite from ski fields and summits to urban centres the world over – with everyone from Hailey Bieber to Emily Ratajkowski and Kendall Jenner counting themselves as fans. Easily styled and able to stand up to whatever the weather throws at you, a Nuptse is undeniably one of the best puffer jackets on the market. Paired with your most-trusted denim, sneakers or boots, and a cross-body bag, you’ll be good to go wherever the night takes you. Alternatively, transform your pre/post-gym get-up and after work ensemble in an instant, simply by layering up P.E Nation Original Recycled Jacket. If Michelin-esque marshmallow isn’t quite the look you’re going for, there are plenty of slimmer-profile down puffer jackets out there that still pack plenty of heat. Alongside The North Face, Patagonia and Kathmandu are major players in this arena with a whole suite of silhouettes that boast stylish and technical appeal.
