First our jeans got looser and more free, now for autumn 2023 we’re feeling liberated in the season’s cargo pants and skirts.
For inspiration, we’re looking back at the ultimate cargo wearers of the 90s and 2000s with music icons including All Saints, TLC and Aaliyah. (Who can argue with them?)

Just like our predecessors, we still love wearing cropped tees, slim-fitting tank tops and flip-flops with cargos, but we’re swerving the era’s head-to-toe utility feels, instead giving our new iteration a ‘grown up’ finish with a tailored blazer, an oversized coat or puffer jacket and sometimes even a heel. We’re even seeing tailored pairs, often with a higher, fitted waistband.
All the usual early adopters are on board with the utility cargo pant, from Rihanna to Hailey Bieber, EmRata to Kendall, so you know they’re It-Girl approved. Everything from silky to sporty versions were spotted on the streets at global Fashion Weeks.
Pick your fabric and colour to match your day, feel, fit – anything goes, just keep it tonal: charcoal, neutral, black, off-white, washed-out khaki green – but the slouchy fit and accompanying effortless attitude must remain. That’s the appeal, they just look and feel easy. Cool without trying.
Our favourites will work day or night, seven days a week. Cotton On's Bobbie Cargo Pants beg to be taken out on the town for date night or dinner with friends. We can channel Parisian flair with Dakota501 Zip off Pant/Short, have fun with colour thanks to House of Sunny's Easy Rider Cargos, and sport khaki classics from Supre, Jaded London and Insight.
If pants aren’t your thing, you can take on the trend in skirt form, paired with an easy tee. When it comes to cargo skirt fabrics, the same applies – anything goes. We like a silky finish as much as a durable twill or classic parachute fabric. Length is also up to choice, and thanks to zip-off varieties you can go from maxi to thigh-skimming in one swift motion. The only essential is large utility pockets.
We were already obsessed with having pockets so this storage-laden trend is a logical next step.*
*NB: the pockets are for extremely light items only - they will fall down if overloaded.
