How To Make Sugar Heart Wedding Favours

Sweet little gifts to say an extra special thanks for standing by your side.

Say no to classic candied almonds on your big day and share the love with these homemade heart-shaped treats instead. Perfect for adding a sentimental touch to your wedding, bridal shower or engagement party, Lucy Tweed’s tasty little butter cookies are easy to bake and can be decorated to suit any theme. Plus, opting to DIY can save you some extra cash so you can focus more on the bigger things – like your wedding dress, bridesmaid dresses, makeup, shoes, designer accessories, your honeymoon, the list goes on...

Cookie Ingredients:

- Makes about 16 x 10cm hearts
- 100g softened butter – I use salted
- 100g castor sugar
- Zest of 1 orange
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract, or seeds from 1 bean
- 1 egg lightly beaten
- 200g flour

Method:

1. In a stand mixer, cream the butter, sugar, zest and sugar together until light in colour.
2. Add the egg and combine.
3. Finally add the flour, stirring slowly to completely mix.
4. Wrap in plastic wrap and put in the fridge for an hour.
5. Preheat oven to 180'C
6. Line two baking trays with baking paper.
7. Knead the dough for a minute to make it smooth and a bit elastic.
8. Then roll out on a floured surface, about 5mm thick and cut into your desired shape.
9. Bake for 12 minutes or until golden.
10. Leave to cool on the trays.

Icing Ingredients:

Edging:
- ½ cup icing sugar
- 2 teaspoons water

Flooding:
- 2 cups icing sugar
- 4 tablespoons water
- 4 different food colouring

Method:

1. In a small bowl combine the edging icing ingredients so it resembles...toothpaste to be honest.
2. Using a piping bag with a small nozzle, pipe an outline around the edge of each heart.
3. Allow this to dry before the next step.
4. Combine the flooding sugar and water in a bowl so it resembles...look, I can only think of gross baby-related stuff, so, just make sure it is opaque, and when drizzled on itself it settles smoothly and quickly.
5. Separate into 4 bowls and tint slowly with drops of colouring until you like the tones.
6. Using 4 different teaspoons, dollop small amounts of each icing into each heart.
7. Tip the icing about, or use a flat small palette knife to push it to the hardened edge.
8. Swirling is encouraged for a dream rainbow sparkle wonder effect.
9. Add assorted sprinkles while the icing is still tacky. If you’re really clever, you can shape them into your initials or those of your guests...

Tip: If you've had too many coffees or just have shaky hands, try to shake the edge line inwards as those bumps will be covered later by the flood.

extra Bridal favours

If you’re making them just for your bridesmaids as an extra special thank you, why not include them in a neat little gift package together with jewellery and beauty products to wear on the day.
