How To Find Your Zen (And Fast)

Instagram. Facebook. Calendar invites. Emails. Texts. It's so loud right now. So, we turned to cult-worth yoga studio Humming Puppy's Mischa Gomez (@mischaism) for the ultimate how to be (/find) quiet guide.

How long, and how often, should we meditate for?
"If your goal is to create a daily practice, start with five minutes in the morning before you head out into the world and slowly build it up as you assimilate it into your routine maybe to end up to 20 minutes twice a day.

"Alternatively, utilise these techniques when you observe that you’re having a stressful or anxious moment in your day, stop what you're doing, make space and  take time out to meet yourself."

Meditation is a hard one for a lot of people - what advice can you offer them?
"There are many approaches to meditation and with most having roots in Eastern traditions, finding the practice which resonates with you – your body, beliefs and stressors are the key to receiving the benefits of meditation.

"You can try different techniques or lineages of meditation until one feels like a good fit for you. It could be loving kindness meditation, body scan or Vedic meditation. Meditation is a practice, that is the entire point of it. It's not to have an empty mind or always being zen, but simply to become an observer of yourself. Some days it will be hard but keep showing up for yourself... that is the practice."

When is it most important to meditate?
"Meditation has been scientifically proven to have many incredible health benefits both physically and psychologically. Just some of them include; stress reduction, boosted immune function, increased brain function, reduced anxiety, decreased blood pressure, muscle relaxation, higher emotional intelligence, improved sociability. Whenever you wish to experience these benefits of meditation is the right time to meditate... There's really no wrong time to meditate!"
