If you’re ready to give your skin the ultimate glow-up, incorporating active skincare in your routine can turn dull and dreary skin into an uber-radiant complexion. But what exactly are active ingredients?

According to Dr Clara Hurst, a cosmetic medical professional, co-founder of The Secret Skincare and founder of Perth-based skin studio Blanc, active skincare is a skincare product that’s formulated with an active ingredient. “Active skincare ingredients are a molecule or chemical compounds that perform a function and have been scientifically studied to prove their ability to work on specific skin concerns and proven to change the skin in some way,” she says.

Essentially, if you want results, active ingredients are where it’s at. So how do you know which active ingredients are right for you? To save you the trial and error, we spoke with Dr Hurst to find out everything you need to know about active skincare and what ingredients to use for specific skin concerns.

Why Do We Need Active Ingredients?

“Active ingredients in skincare help that product deliver on what it promises. They are useful in targeting skin conditions such as acne, ageing, uneven skin tone, pigmentation and more. Many skincare products are made up of both active and inactive ingredients – the inactive ingredients provide support for the active ingredients. They help deliver the active ingredient to your skin and help with the stabilisation of the formula so you can get the most out of the active ingredients. Inactive ingredients can also provide cosmetic benefits such as hydration.”

How Do We Know What Active Ingredients To Use?

“Be cautious when choosing the products and ingredients you use as each one has different purposes, benefits and potential side effects. It’s best to identify your skin type first to be able to determine the most appropriate ingredients for your skin and your skin concerns or goals. Start slowly and introduce active ingredients one at a time to monitor your skin’s reaction.”
