From Newborn To 12 Months Old, These Are The Baby Essentials You Need

Consider this your first-year checklist

Whether you’re expecting your first, or it’s not your first rodeo, prepping for the arrival of your little one can feel like a blur. Between appointments, furnishing the nursery and readying your hospital bag, it can feel like there’s precious little time to think about life beyond delivery day. Ahead, we round up the essentials every little one needs for their first year earthside (so you can tick ‘baby wardrobe’ off the to-do list!).

Underwear

Newborns need singlets and a lot of them. Useful as an extra layer in winter but also to protect delicate skin, the baby vest is a MUST. A few for home and a few for your nappy bag mean you'll always have backups in case of *emergencies - at the top of our wishlist? Some bulk packs by Bonds Baby. Bloomers are also a sweet addition to any little collection, and can slip easily over the top of disposable nappies. Look for classic styles for everyday wear or coordinating knit sets made from breathable natural fibres for optimum comfort. Alternatively, if you’re looking to lower your environmental footprint, reusable cloth nappies are a more considered option.

Onesies

Whether you call them onesies, bodysuits or rompers, there’s no denying bub’s burgeoning wardrobe will be full of them. Why? They’re the perfect all-in-one outfit, available in a range of prints, neutral solids and textures like cotton jersey, terry fleece and velour (perfect for keeping them cosy in winter). Stock up on short sleeve, long sleeve and sleeveless onesies for everyday style no matter the season – Little Green & Co or the cult Wondersuits by Bonds are both great places to start.

Outerwear

Keep them snug as a bug with adorable outerwear like mini puffer jackets, classic duffle coats, cosy knitwear and sweats. Your climate might not call for more than a few key pieces of outerwear, but when they’re this cute, what’s the harm in adding one (or two) more to their collection?

Accessories

It’s these little everyday extras that make all the difference to bub’s comfort. Mittens and socks will keep those ten tiny fingers and ten tiny toes warm and toasty, while a matching beanie will help prevent heat transfer in cooler conditions. Mix and match with other adorable accessories like booties, knitted pointelle tights and hair accessories when a special occasion calls.

Bedtime

While every baby has their own bedtime groove, having the right nursery essentials on hand can help them settle into a sleep routine. Swaddles help to soothe a newborn and protect from their startle reflex (and tiny nail scratches), keeping them snug and calm. Sleepsuits and baby sleeping bags are another convenient option, with brands like ergoPouch offering a wide range of colours, prints and (most importantly) TOG ratings. TOG stands for Thermal Overall Grade, and will tell you which sleeping bag will keep your newborn at a safe and comfortable temperature. The warmer the weather, the lower the TOG; colder conditions call for a higher TOG.
