Busy the brood at home (or at least the neighbourhood).

The approach of the school holidays can fill many parents with dread, and for good reason – keeping the kids entertained can be a full time occupation. But we have a handful of ideas for keeping the tykes amused for a good hour (or finger crossed, even two). Here sit 5 of our faves…

The crafternoon

Pull out the paintbrushes and all of the Play-Doh you can muster for a few hours helping your kids channel their inner artist. Paint by numbers or keep it (slightly less) mess free with some colouring in. If you fear the potential for plenty of mess (don’t we all), try to keep your floor or table as protected as possible, layer plenty of newspaper or even tarps if you have them! Aprons are also a very good idea.

Reading hour

Pull a selection of books from your own home library for an afternoon learning to read (or helping your kids brush up on their existing skills). Feel like your children’s book collection falls short? Of course there are the classics but you can also use this opportunity to educate and enlighten by gathering a diverse selection of new reads.

Hit the park

Whether your kids are playing ball, are on wheels, or just learning to manoeuvre on skates, you’ll find hours of entertainment at the local park. For concrete surfaces, best to bundle the brood up in protective gear like helmets and enclosed shoes.

Play with puzzles

Puzzles provide hours of entertainment for kids of all ages (and plenty of adults to boot). The key is to find a puzzle focused on a subject that they’re a fan of. Thankfully there’s something for everyone in the world of puzzles these days, for animal lovers, beach bunnies, and even for babies.

Build a pillow fort

Gather all of the sheets, cushions, pillows, and blankets and doonas that you can and you’re sorted for your pillow fort. For a base, set up two to three chairs, with the backs of each facing each other. On top, drape light blankets and bed sheets for the roof, and stack cushions as walls and across the floor as a super soft base. Fairy lights add an extra special touch for movie nights and storytime.
