Fighting Fit – How to Prepare for your First Boxing Class

Clue up before you glove up!

Boxing is one of the fastest growing workouts in Australia and it’s also one of the activities you can log in THE ICONIC SPORT Challenge! So we asked boxer and Boxing Australia L1 Coach Lizza Gebilagin for her top tips for beginner boxers. Start preparing now and you’ll be a pro before you know it!

1. Prepare your hands

“The most basic thing you can do each session is to make sure you're wrapping your hands properly. If you're new to boxing or you have been wearing cotton gloves underneath boxing gloves, ditch those and buy a pair of gel quick wraps – learning how to use regular wraps can be a bit daunting at first.”

2. Use the right gloves

“If your gloves are too thin, and you're hitting the bags or pads hard, you're increasing the amount of strain you're placing on your wrist, so opt for 10-12 ounce gloves as a beginner.”

3. Strengthen your wrists

“The most common injuries for beginners and experienced boxers alike are wrist sprains and fractures. The wrist is such a delicate area made up of small bones, thin ligaments and little cartilage, but while boxing, it has to bear a lot of the impact when you land a punch. And this happens over and over again throughout a boxing session. So to strengthen and stabilise your wrists, try doing push-ups on your knuckles. It’s tough but it’ll help you blitz your first boxing class!”
