Don’t judge, I was young and impressionable, but Mischa Barton was my all-time style icon during the noughties and TBH, looking back I have no regrets. For those who aren’t familiar with the name, she began her career quite young – modelling for Calvin Klein and appearing in major films like Notting Hill and The Sixth Sense – but my obsession only really bloomed once she starred in The OC as Marissa Cooper.

She was in her prime – everything she had, I had to have too. I bet I’m not alone either. So, while the flashbacks of trends from the 2000s are still fresh in our minds, I’m just going to take a minute to fangirl over my teenage style queen once more (for outfit research, I swear…).

Her most iconic look was probably the Sass & Bide dress teamed with bootleg jeans and dangerously pointy pumps (see above for reference). Too young to get a job and buy the real deal, I shared a knock-off version with my older sister, who stitched sequins on herself because it had to match Mischa’s.

On the topic of matching, my year 10 formal dress was the exact same cut as this floaty green design Mischa wore to the Golden Globes, right down to the handkerchief hemline. I would post a pic as proof but it’s lost in the abyss of MSN Spaces…

Embellished boleros were also a big thing. She wore hers to dress up a basic cotton tank and skinny jean combo, and naturally I did the same. I rocked a side fringe like hers too (which was more like a dorky half bang thinking about it now). And yes, when my fringe wasn’t annoying the hell out of my left eye, you best believe it was pinned back in an outrageously high quiff inspired by Cooper’s love interest Alex Kelly.

I thought I would look back and cringe, but turns out the Mischa Barton look is just as relevant now as it was those years ago…

So if you're ready to embrace the return of the 2000s, you've come to the right place. Californiiiaaaaaa, here we cooooommmmmmeeeee!
