Double Denim: How To Wear The Canadian Tuxedo In 2022

The Canadian Tuxedo is back, baby!

The twenty-year trend cycle is in full swing, which means the Y2K aesthetic is well and truly back. Low-rise jeans, baby tees and Indie Sleaze have all officially been resurrected – whether you’re ready or not. So, it’s only natural that the Canadian Tuxedo has also been awakened from its decades-long slumber. Remember those now-infamous images of celebs walking down the red carpet draped in denim head-to-toe? Britney and Justin have a lot to answer for. Thankfully, there’s a stack of modern takes hitting our feeds on the daily, with everyone from Kanye West and Julia Fox to Bella Hadid and Steve Harvey doubling (or tripling) down on their denim.

Originating in Canada circa 1951, the Canadian Tuxedo kicked off with beloved American singer Bing Crosby while on a hunting trip in the Great White North. After a long day, he attempted to check into a bougie Vancouver hotel wearing head-to-toe Levi’s. To his surprise, he was denied service as he didn’t fit the hotel’s dress code. Funnily enough, Levi’s founder Levi Strauss heard about the kerfuffle and ended up creating a custom design specifically for Crosby.

Now that you know where it all started, the real question is: how will you pull it off? We’ll walk you through how to do the Canadian Tuxedo flawlessly.

Fit Is Everything

To pair denim-on-denim perfectly, it all comes down to the fit. Start from the bottom up: your jeans. If you’re a beginner, opt for a simple straight leg. Stay away from ultra-skinny or oversized cuts if you want to keep your proportions in check (however, if you’re confident playing with volume, choose any cut of denim you like!).

The key to pulling off a proportioned Canadian Tuxedo? Keeping the fit balanced. Take notes from Julia Fox and Kanye West’s full-denim looks at the latest Kenzo runway show. Ye rocked a puffy Nigo-designed jacket from the Japanese fashion house, while Fox chose a cropped version that accentuated her decolletage. Another celeb recently doused in denim was Bella Hadid, who chose a tight corset and loose-fitting jacket layered over the top.

Pair It Up

Throughout its sartorial lifecycle, the Canadian Tuxedo has been styled with an array of accessories and pieces thanks to its deceptively versatile nature. Consider yourself a traditionalist? A simple white t-shirt and black boots are a timeless choice. Off the back of the workwear resurgence, a recent micro-trend that’s made a comeback is pairing bandanas with denim jackets or jeans. The easiest way to work the bandana into your look? Draping it loosely around the neck or letting it hang from a belt loop or back pocket.

If you’re a nonconformist and like to create maximalist outfits through a modern lens, you can step your Canadian Tuxedo up a notch. Get experimental and layer an oversized trench coat in a contrast wash over your favourite jeans. Whether you go for French for full, a thoughtful tuck is a great way to streamline denim separates. A chambray or denim shirt is the easiest option here, however lightweight denim jackets and shackets can also be buttoned up and tucked to create the same effect.

Want to spice up your tux without adding extra layers? This season, jeans with graphics, embellishments and panels are coming through thick and fast from your favourite denim brands. Dr Denim’s Ebro Jacket is a subtler choice, while the Ksubi Van Winkle Dance Klub jeans are perfect if you’re not afraid to get a little loud. Get the DIY vibe going with pins and badges on jackets or back pockets a la Pharrell Williams.
