Colour Theory: Can Red Shoes Really Make You Run Faster?

Stimulate the senses

At the 2018 Winter Olympics, the Norwegian speedskating team abandoned a long-held theory that their traditional red suits played a part in their historic medal winning success. For the first time, they slipped into figure-hugging blue suits after Norwegian scientists suggested that blue would be more powerful when it came to evoking a need for speed.

Perhaps this is because certain colours can have a significant impact on our psychological and emotional wellbeing. Studies have shown that blue hues encourage a sense of calm, which could provide a competitive edge at the starting line. That’s not to say you should rule out other colours which also have their benefits. Red has been linked to optimism, which is handy when you’re trying to break your personal best on the track.

For serious athletes, a bold shoe in Chilli Pepper red might be instantly appealing. The colour is said to stimulate the senses which could lead to higher motivation. Take Kemba Walker’s show-stopping red high tops worn at the recent 2019 NBA All-Star game. If nothing else, a colour so bold may well have dazzled opponents.

But for those seeking thrills in the form hiking or speed cycling, Biking Red might inspire adventure and make you feel strong and powerful. While Peach Pink imparts a healthy glow and if you feel healthy, you’ll be motivated to keep going.

According to Leatrice Eiseman, Executive Director of the Pantone Color Institute, “This palette of versatile hues builds a sense of empowerment and confidence, enabling the wearer to choose the colors that best reflect his or her mood and persona.”

This might just inspire you to pay closer attention when it comes to choosing new activewear this season. According to the Pantone Colour Institute, there’s plenty of meaning behind the latest trend colours. The good news is you’re not bound to one or two. You get to choose the right shade for you and your workout style.
