While Zoom and FaceTime catch-ups are keeping us virtually closer than ever before, too much of it can actually be draining, particularly for people who have a million other things on their plate and can’t constantly keep up with the webcam. Staying connected is highly important while we physically are distant, but there are other ways to brighten someone’s day without needing to see their immediate reaction. Here are the little things that have been making us smile this week, perhaps you could pass them on.
1. Send a text – something short and sweet, that’s not copied and pasted from a chain, not calling them out to partake in a challenge, just a message without reason and without the expectation of an immediate response, or any response at all.
2. Record a video message – that way they can watch it at a time that suits them and still see your face.
3. Tag them in a meme – Instagram posts relating to isolation are giving us life right now and we could always do with something that makes us smile, even if for a second.
4. Share something that made you happy – old footage you found in your phone’s camera roll or a Youtube link to a video of your favourite animal doing something silly, just because.
5. Send them a gift – whether it’s a meal from their local takeaway joint to keep their bellies full, a bouquet of flowers to freshen up their working-from-home space, or something special to celebrate their birthday, an anniversary or even Mother’s Day (coming up!). There are still services operating, including us, which offer home delivery – just be sure to change the address to their place, not yours.
