7 Books We'll Skip Screen Time For This Weekend

Weekend plans? Sorted.

In an effort to slice down our screentime (which is on the up in a big way this week), we’re lining up some weekend reads. The below come recommended by Mr Turner – long-time friend of THE ICONIC and one of the names behind Bondi’s Gertrude & Alice bookstore (one of the many bookstores currently delivering so you can #StayHome). Find a sunny spot at home and settle in.

1. My Dark Vanessa

Kate Elizabeth Russell

“A fictional love affair between a teacher and student that has just been released, and is already making headlines. It gets cinematically dark — it’s an ambitious debut that will spark a lot of discussion and discomfort.”

2. American Dirt

Jeanine Cummins

“New release, and acclaimed to be the book of the 2020. We recommend customers sit down and read it because we know that if you can get past the first 10 pages, you will want to divulge the whole book in one sitting. You’ll lose sleep because you can’t put it down. It’s controversial, and compelling. Already an Oprah’s book club pick too!”

3. Plants for the People

Erin Lovell Verinder

“We actually launched Erin’s book in our store. It’s an incredible reconnection between people and plants. Full of healing remedies and information on plants, as well as gorgeous photos. There is also a section focusing on immunity, which given our current circumstances is insightful. Erin writes, ‘Plant medicine is the people’s medicine, it always has been and always will be.’”

4. Girl, Woman, Other

Bernadine Evaristo

“Evaristo is the first woman to win the Man Booker Prize (2019), one of the most prestigious and renowned awards in literature. It follows the lives of 12 characters touching on the history of the black British experience — the attention to detail is moving and it depicts fiction at its finest.”

5. There Was Still Love

Favel Parrett

“This novel is deeply moving, and beautifully written. It’s a short and oh-so-sweet story of memory, family and love. On the cover of the book there’s a testimonial shrieking that the book ‘sings with humanity,’ and I couldn’t agree with it more. “

6. Where the Crawdads Sing

Delia Owens

“Probably the most popular book from 2019 that we still cannot stop recommending to people. It hooks you back into the world of reading with a story you can’t put down. Touches on a bit of romance, bit of crime, and entwine loneliness, nature, and trust. Reese Witherspoon has also bought the movie rights so you’ll be sure to see this in the cinema in a couple years … Be ahead of the trend and read it now.”

7. Places I Stopped on The Way Home

Meg Fee

“A series of essays from Meg Fee about her love and life whilst living in the big apple. It is raw, beautifully written, and makes you dream of New York for weeks. Everything she encountered taught her something about herself and this is a big book of journeys and learnings. I read a review about this book saying that 'Places I Stopped On The Way Home may be one woman’s outlook on life, but it will leave you wanting to make the most of yours.'”
